ANAUD SERIES
The Anaud series consists of shallow, well drained soils that formed in residuum and colluvium derived from welded tuff. The Anaud soils are on mountains and ridges. Slopes are 2 to 30 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 355 mm and the mean annual temperature is about 7 degrees C.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, frigid Aridic Lithic Argixerolls
TYPICAL PEDON: Anaud very cobbly loam, rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) The soil surface is partially covered with approximately 20 percent gravel and 30 percent cobbles. Lithology of the fragments is welded tuff.
A1--0 to 8 cm; brown (10YR 5/3) very cobbly loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; moderate fine granular structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine roots; many very fine tubular pores; 20 percent gravel and 30 percent cobbles; neutral (pH 7.2); clear smooth boundary. (5 to 13 cm thick)
A2--8 to 25 cm; brown (10YR 4/3) very cobbly loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; many very fine, fine, medium and coarse roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; 20 percent gravel and 30 percent cobbles; neutral (pH 7.2); clear wavy boundary. (15 to 25 cm thick)
Bt--25 to 41 cm; brown (10YR 4/3) very cobbly clay loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, moderately sticky and very plastic; common very fine, fine, medium and coarse roots; common very fine and fine tubular pores; common distinct clay films lining pores and on faces of peds; 20 percent gravel and 30 percent cobbles; neutral (pH 7.2); abrupt irregular boundary. (12 to 25 cm thick)
R--41 cm; hard welded tuff.
TYPE LOCATION: Lincoln County, Nevada; approximately 15 miles northeast of Atlanta; 3,200 feet north and 3,500 feet west of the projected southeastern corner of section 10, T. 8 N., R. 67 E.; USGS The Gouge Eye 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle; latitude 38 degrees 34 minutes 12 seconds N and longitude 114 degrees 25 minutes 58 seconds W; UTM zone 11, 723656e, 4272186n, NAD 83.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: Usually dry, moist in winter and spring, dry in summer and fall and intermittently moist for 10 to 20 days cumulative between July and September due to convection storms; aridic bordering on xeric soil moisture regime.
Mean annual soil temperature: 7 to 8 degrees C.
Mollic epipedon thickness: 36 to 50 cm including all or part of the argillic horizon.
Depth to bedrock: 36 to 50 cm.
Reaction: Neutral through moderately alkaline.
Mineralogy: 15 to 24 percent volcanic glass in the 0.02 to 2 mm fraction and averages 0.01 to 0.09 percent Al plus Fe, extracted by ammonium oxalate.
Particle-size control section - Clay content: Averages 20 to 35 percent.
Rock fragments: 35 to 60 percent; mainly cobbles.
A horizons - Value: 4 or 5 dry, 2 or 3 moist.
Chroma: 1 through 3, dry or moist.
Organic matter content: 0.5 to 1 percent.
Bt horizon - Value: 4 through 6 dry, 2 through 4 moist.
Chroma: 2 through 4 dry, 2 or 3 moist.
Texture: Clay loam or loam.
Modifier: Very cobbly.
Calcium Carbonate: Some pedons have thin calcium carbonate masses on the bottom of rock fragments with a non-calcareous matrix.

Granquin soils have mollic epipedons that are 25 to 36 cm thick.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Anaud soils are on mountains and hills. These soils formed in residuum and colluvium derived from welded tuff. Slopes are 2 to 30 percent. Elevations are 1,860 to 2,560 meters. The climate is cool semiarid with cool moist winters and warm, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 300 to 400 mm, mean annual temperature is 6 to 7 degrees C, and the frost-free season is 90 to 110 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Cagas,
Chubard, and
Nuhelen soils. Cagas soils are moderately deep to a paralithic contact and have 60 to 85 percent rock fragments in the control section. Chubard and Nuhelen soils are mesic and are less than 36 cm deep to bedrock.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained; medium to very high runoff; moderately high saturated hydraulic conductivity.
USE AND VEGETATION: Anaud soils are used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. The potential native vegetation includes bluebunch wheatgrass, Thurbers needlegrass, Indian ricegrass and black sagebrush. This pedon is correlated to Ecological Site R028AY036NV, Shallow Clay Loam 12-14 P.Z.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Eastern Nevada. These soils are not extensive. MLRA 28A.
