BISCHOFF SERIES

The Bischoff series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in loess influenced colluvium and slope alluvium derived from sedimentary rock. These soils are on mountain slopes, hillslopes, swales on mountain slopes, interfluves, and valley floors. Slopes are 5 to 60 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 680 mm and mean annual air temperature is about 3 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic Pachic Argicryolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Bischoff silt loam, in rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A1--0 to 3 cm; brown (7.5YR 4/2) silt loam, very dark gray (7.5YR 3/1) moist; moderate medium and coarse granular structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and common fine roots; common very fine and few fine tubular and irregular pores; 5 percent gravel; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); abrupt smooth boundary.

A2--3 to 10 cm; brown (7.5YR 4/2) silt loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and common fine roots; common very fine and few fine tubular and irregular pores; 5 percent gravel; neutral (pH 7.3); clear wavy boundary.

AB--10 to 41 cm; brown (7.5YR 4/3) silt loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; weak medium and coarse subangular blocky structure parting to moderate fine angular blocky; moderately hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and few fine and medium roots; common very fine and few fine tubular and irregular pores; few discontinuous faint clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 5 percent gravel; neutral (pH 7.1); clear wavy boundary.

Bt1--41 to 74 cm; reddish brown (5YR 5/3) silty clay loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) moist; weak fine and medium prismatic structure parting to moderate fine and medium angular blocky; hard, firm, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; few very fine, fine, and medium roots; few very fine and fine tubular pores; many continuous distinct clay films on faces of peds and in pores; common uncoated silt grains; 5 percent gravel; neutral (pH 7.1); clear wavy boundary.

Bt2--74 to 119 cm; reddish brown (5YR 5/3) silty clay loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/3) moist; moderate medium prismatic structure parting to moderate fine and medium subangular blocky; very hard, extremely firm, very sticky and very plastic; few very fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; many continuous prominent clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 5 percent gravel, 2 percent cobbles; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear wavy boundary.

Bt3--119 to 152 cm; reddish brown (5YR 5/4) silty clay, reddish brown (5YR 4/3) moist; moderate medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; extremely hard, extremely firm, very sticky and very plastic; few very fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; many discontinuous prominent clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 5 percent gravel, 2 percent cobbles; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6).
