Slopes range from 1 to 60 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 18 inches (457 mm) and the mean annual air temperature is about 60 degrees F (15.6 degrees C).

COMPETING SERIES: This is the
Musquiz (TX) soils series. Musquiz soils have calcic horizon at depths of 30 to 50 inches.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Blacktail soils are on fan remnants, side slopes, and pediments at elevations of 4,000 to 5,600 feet (1219 to 1707 meters). Slopes range from 1 to 60 percent. These soils formed in fan alluvium from mixed sources. The mean annual precipitation is 16 to 20 inches (406 to 508 mm) and occurs as thunderstorms during July to September and as gentle rains during December and January. The mean annual air temperature is 57 to 62 degrees F (13.9 to 16.7 degrees C). The frost-free period is 160 to 210 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Terrarossa,
Pyeatt,
Gardencan and
Lanque soils. Terrarossa soils have an abrupt textural change. Pyeatt and Lanque soils do not have argillic horizons. Gardencan soils are fine-loamy.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium to rapid runoff; slow permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Used for livestock grazing, military training, recreation and wildlife habitat. Vegetation includes plains lovegrass, sideoats grama, Texas bluestem, crinkleawn, beggartick grass, cane beardgrass, false mesquite, velvet-pod mimosa, sotol, Palmer agave and yerbe-de-pasmo.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southern and Central Arizona. Blacktail soils are of moderate extent. MLRA 41 and zones in MLRA 38 that are adjacent to 41.
