BOJO SERIES
The Bojo series consists of very shallow and shallow, well drained soils that formed in residuum and colluvium derived from mixed metamorphic or extrusive igneous rocks. Bojo soils are on summits, crests and sideslopes of mountains and hills. Slopes are 2 to 50 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 180 mm and the mean annual temperature is about 9 degrees C.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Lithic Haplargids
TYPICAL PEDON: Bojo very gravelly loam--rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)
A1--0 to 5 cm; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) very gravelly loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; weak very thin platy structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine roots; many very fine and fine vesicular pores; 40 percent gravel and 5 percent cobbles, slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); clear smooth boundary. (5 to 13 cm thick)
A2--5 to 13 cm; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) gravelly loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; moderate very thin platy structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine roots; many very fine and fine vesicular pores; 20 percent gravel, slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 8 cm thick)
Bt--13 to 20 cm; brown (10YR 5/3) gravelly clay loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; common very fine, few fine and medium roots; common very fine tubular pores; few fine faint clay films lining pores; 15 percent gravel, slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); abrupt smooth boundary. (8 to 20 cm thick)
2R--20 cm; hard metamorphic rock.
TYPE LOCATION: Humboldt County, Nevada, approximately 2,350 feet east, 900 feet south of the northwest corner of section 27, T. 34 N., R. 42 E.; latitude 40 degrees 47 minutes 50 seconds N and longitude 117 degrees 14 minutes 9 seconds W; WGS84 Decimal Degrees 40.76750000 latitude, -117.1905556 longitude.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: Moist in winter and spring, dry from June through October; aridic soil moisture regime.
Mean annual soil temperature: 8 to 9 degrees C.
Depth to bedrock: 13 to 36 cm.
Reaction: Slightly alkaline or moderately alkaline.
Particle-size control section - Clay content: 18 to 35 percent.
Rock fragments: 15 to 35 percent.
A horizon
Value: 6 or 7 dry, 4 or 5 moist.
Chroma: 2 through 4.
Bt horizon
Value: 5 or 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist.
Chroma: 2 through 4.
Rock fragments: 10 to 25 percent, dominantly gravel.
Textures: Loam, clay loam, sandy clay loam, gravelly clay loam or gravelly loam.
Clay content: 25 to 35 percent.
Other features: This horizon is slightly calcareous in some pedons.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the
Envol,
Hoskinnini, and
Kimnoli series.
Envol and
Kimnoli soils have Btk horizons and
Hoskinnini soils have Bk horizons.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Bojo soils are on hill and mountain crest summits and side slopes. Slopes are 2 to 75 percent. The soils formed in residuum and colluvium from metamorphic or extrusive volcanic rock. Elevations are 1,375 to 1,830 meters. The mean annual precipitation is 180 to 250 mm; the mean annual temperature is 8 to 9 degrees C; and the frost-free season is 100 to 120 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Burrita,
Hoot, and
Trunk soils. Burrita soils have a clayey-skeletal control section. Hoot soils have a loamy-skeletal particle-size control section. Trunk soils are more than 50 cm deep and have a fine control section.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained; medium or rapid runoff; moderately high saturated hydraulic conductivity.
USE AND VEGETATION: Livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. The present vegetation is dominantly Wyoming big sagebrush, shadscale, rabbitbrush, Thurber needlegrass, and bottlebrush squirreltail.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: North-central Nevada. Bojo soils are of small extent.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Ochric epipedon - The zone from the surface to 13 cm (A1 and A2 horizons).
Argillic horizon - The zone from about 13 to 20 cm (the Bt horizon).
Lithic contact - The boundary at about 20 cm (R layer).
Particle-size control section - The zone from the soil surface to about 20 cm.
