EDGEWOOD SERIES


The Edgewood series consists of very deep, somewhat excessively drained soils on creeps mantling cirques, dipslopes, scarpslopes and stratovolcanos. These soils formed in colluvium derived from volcanic rock or tephra. Slopes are 2 to 50 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 32 inches. Mean annual air temperature is about 42 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Ashy-skeletal, glassy, frigid Humic Udivitrands

TYPICAL PEDON: Edgewood gravelly ashy loamy coarse sand - under white fir/snowbrush ceanothus-prostrate ceanothus/Virginia strawberry plant association, woodland, on a 30 percent slope with west aspect at 5530 feet elevation. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise noted.)

Oi--0 to 1 inch; slightly decomposed plant material; forest litter of needles, twigs, cones and leaves; abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 2 inches thick)

Oe--1 to 2 inches; moderately decomposed plant material; forest litter of needles, twigs, cones and leaves; abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 2 inches thick)

A1--2 to 7 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) gravelly ashy loamy coarse sand, dark brown (10YR 3/3) dry; single grain; loose, nonsticky, nonplastic; few fine and coarse, common medium and many very fine roots; many very fine interstitial pores; 20 percent indurated volcanic rock gravel, 5 percent indurated volcanic rock cobbles, 2 percent indurated volcanic rock stones, 1 percent indurated volcanic rock boulders and 2 percent moderately cemented pumice paragravel; slightly acid (pH 6.4); clear wavy boundary. (2 to 10 inches thick)

A2--7 to 19 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) cobbly ashy coarse sandy loam, brown (10YR 5/3) dry; weak medium subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; common fine and medium, few coarse and many very fine roots; many fine and very fine irregular pores; 15 percent indurated volcanic rock gravel, 10 percent indurated volcanic rock cobbles, 5 percent indurated volcanic rock stones, 1 percent indurated volcanic rock boulders and 2 percent moderately cemented pumice paragravel; slightly acid (pH 6.4); gradual smooth boundary. (0 to 14 inches thick)

Bw1--19 to 39 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/3) extremely stony ashy loamy coarse sand, brown (7.5YR 5/4) dry; single grain; loose, nonsticky, nonplastic; common fine and coarse, many very fine and medium, and few very coarse roots; many very fine interstitial pores; 20 percent indurated volcanic rock gravel, 30 percent indurated volcanic rock cobbles, 25 percent indurated volcanic rock stones and 1 percent moderately cemented pumice paragravel and ; slightly acid (pH 6.2); clear wavy boundary. (6 to 32 inches thick)

2Bw2--39 to 61 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) very cobbly ashy sandy loam, brown (10YR 5/3) dry; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; few fine, medium and coarse and many very fine roots; many very fine irregular pores; 15 percent indurated volcanic rock gravel, 20 percent indurated volcanic rock cobbles and 2 percent indurated volcanic rock stones; slightly acid (pH 6.2).

TYPE LOCATION: Klamath County, Oregon; about 12 miles north and 3 miles east of Klamath Falls; 800 feet east and 100 feet south of the northwest corner of section 35, T. 36 S., R. 8 E., Swan Lake Point, Oregon USGS quadrangle. UTM: 603882 meters E; 4696339 meters N; Zone 10 N. NAD27 CONUS datum. Latitude: 42 degrees 24 minutes 52.00 seconds north, Longitude: 121 degrees 44 minutes 15.00 seconds west.

Soil Moisture: udic regime. Moisture control section - 8 to 24 inches, dry in all parts for 30 to 45 consecutive days in August, September or October

Landscape - mountains

Climate - cold moist winters, cool dry summers
Mean annual air temperature - 40 to 45 degrees F
Mean annual precipitation - 20 to 44 inches
Frost-free period - 50 to 90 days

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Ryespur and Yawhee soils. Ryespur soils have an argillic horizon, a xeric soil moisture regime and lack andic soil properties. Yawhee soils have an argillic horizon.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY:
Drainage - somewhat excessively
Permeability - moderately rapid

USE AND VEGETATION: Edgewood soils are used for timber production, wildlife habitat, watershed and recreation. The potential natural plant community is the white fir/snowbrush ceanothus-prostrate ceanothus/Virginia strawberry plant association. Common overstory species include Douglas-fir, incense cedar, ponderosa pine, sugar pine and white fir. Common understory species include greenleaf manzanita, creeping snowberry, snowbrush ceanothus, prostrate ceanothus and long-stolon sedge.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Klamath County, Oregon; MLRA 3. Series is of small extent.
