TYPE LOCATION: Latah County, Idaho; about 2300 feet south and 1320 feet west of the northeast corner of section 19, T.43N., R.4W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Average annual soil temperature - 47 to 50 degrees F.
Moisture control section (4 to 12 inch depth) - dry for 45 to 60 consecutive days in late summer
Base saturation (at depths of 10 to 40 inches) - 40 to 60 percent
Rock fragments (at depths of 10 to 40 inches) - 35 to 60 percent
Bt horizons - have less than 1.2 time as much clay as the overlying eluvial horizons - lack clay films in some pedons
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Atring, Barpeak, Beekman, Forgay, Geppert, Half Dome, Hartless, Hilltish, Kanid, Straight, Vena, and woodin series. The Atring, Geppert, Straight, and woodin soils are moderately deep to a paralithic contact. The Barpeak, Forgay, Half Dome, and Hartless soils do not have Bt horizons. The Beekman, Hilltish, and Vena soils are moderately deep to a lithic contact. The Kanid soils are deep to a paralithic contact.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The soils are in uplands and have slopes of 35 to 65 percent. Elevation is 2,600 to 3,500 feet. The soils formed in loess mixed with residuum and colluvium from metasedimentary rock. The average annual precipitation if 24 to 26
inches. The frost-free period ranges from 110 to 130 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include the Huckleberry and Minaloosa series. Huckleberry soils are moderately deep and contain volcanic ash.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; very rapid runoff; moderate permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Used for timber production. The natural vegetation is mainly Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, mallow ninebark, wild rose, and snowberry.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Latah County, Idaho. This series is of small extent.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Bozeman, Montana
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Latah County, Idaho, 1979.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Ochric epipedon - the zone from the surface to 11 inches (Oi, A1, and A2
horizons);
Cambic horizon - the zone from 11 to 60 inches (Bw1 and Bw2, Bt1, Bt2, and BC horizons);
Particle-size control section - The zone from 10 to 40 inches;
Farber soils have a mesic temperature regime and a xeric moisture regime.
As of 8/2008 this series has been changed to inactive status because this concept does not exist in Latah County. This series has mainly been correlated to Ardenvoir and Minaloosa series components.
