GOFFPEAK SERIES

The Goffpeak series consists of deep, well drained soils formed in volcanic ash and pumice over granitic bedrock on mountain slopes. Slopes range from 3 to 60 percent. The average annual precipitation is about 45 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 40 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Ashy, glassy Xeric Vitricryands

TYPICAL PEDON: Goffpeak paragravelly ashy sandy loam - under coniferous trees on a 45 percent northeast-facing slope at an elevation of 5,180 feet. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated. All textures are apparent field textures.)

Oi--0 to 0.5 inch; slightly decomposed forest litter.

C--0.5 to 1 inch; light gray (10YR 7/2) ashy fine sandy loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) moist; weak fine crumb structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; 10 percent pumice; slightly acid (pH 6.3); abrupt smooth boundary. (1/2 to 3 inches thick)

Bw1--1 to 13 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) paragravelly ashy sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine, fine and medium roots, few very fine tubular pores; 15 percent pumice; slightly acid (pH 6.4); gradual wavy boundary. (12 to 15 inches thick)

Bw2--13 to 26 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) paragravelly ashy sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine and medium roots; few very fine tubular pores; 15 percent pumice; slightly acid (pH 6.5); clear wavy boundary. 12 to 15 inches thick)

C--26 to 42 inches; yellow (10YR 7/6) white (10YR 8/1) and black (10YR 2/1), very paragravelly ashy sandy loam, brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) light gray (10YR 7/2) and black (10YR 2/1) moist; single grain; loose; few fine roots; 50 percent pumice; neutral (pH 6.8); abrupt wavy boundary. (16 to 20 inches thick)

2R--42 inches; fractured granitic.

TYPE LOCATION: Chelan County, Washington; about 9 miles north of Ardenvoir, Washington; 1,800 feet west and 100 feet north of southeast corner of sec. 10, T. 27 N., R. 20 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The average annual soil temperature is estimated to be 41 to 43 degrees F. These soils are dry for 45 to 60 days following the summer solstice. Depth to a lithic contact is 40 to 60 inches. The upper part of the particle-size control section has an estimated moist bulk density of 0.60 to 0.85 g/cc, volcanic glass content of 30 to 60 percent, acid-oxalate extractable aluminum plus one-half of the acid-oxalate extractable iron of 1.0 to 2.0 percent, 15-bar water retention is 5 to 12 percent for air dried samples, and 5 to 35 percent pumice. The lower part of the particle-size control section has 35 to 75 percent pumice.

The C horizon has value of 5 to 7 moist and chroma is 1 or 2 dry or moist.

The Bw horizons have 7.5YR or 10YR hue, value is 3 to 5 moist, and chroma is 1 to 3 dry, and 2 to 6 moist. Texture is paragravelly ashy sandy loam, paragravelly ashy fine sandy loam, paragravelly ashy coarse sandy loam, or paragravelly ashy loamy sand.

The C horizon has hue of 2.5Y or 10YR, value is 5 to 8 moist, and chroma is 4 to 6 dry, and 1 to 6 moist. Texture is very paragravelly ashy sandy loam, extremely paragravelly ashy sandy loam, or extremely paragravelly ashy fine sandy loam.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Collier, Kittleson, Shroyton, Steiger, Sycan and Wocreek series. Collier, Steiger, Sycan and Wocreek soils are over 60 inches deep. Kittleson soils lack the pumice paragravel and have a bulk density of 0.85 to 0.95 g/cc. Shroyton soils have a mollic epipedon.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Goffpeak soils are on mountain slopes on all aspects. Slopes are 3 to 65 percent. Elevation is 4,800 to 6,000 feet. These soils formed in volcanic ash and pumice over granitic rock. The climate has warm, dry summers and cool, moist winters. The average annual precipitation is 30 to 50 inches. The mean January temperature is about 22oF; the mean July temperature is about 57 degrees F., and the mean annual temperature is about 39 to 41 degrees F. The growing season at 28 degrees F. is about 100 to 140 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: This is the Palmich soil. Palmich soils are ashy-pumiceous and frigid.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium or rapid runoff; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Woodland, wildlife habitat, watershed, and recreation. Native vegetation is Douglas-fir and lodgepole pine, with an understory of willow, pinegrass, spirea, lupine, Idaho fescue, and sticky currant.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: East slopes of the Cascade Mountains in the northern part of Chelan County, Washington; MLRA 6. Series is of moderate extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Portland, Oregon

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Chelan County, Washington, 1995.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are the 0.5 to 40.5 inch particle-size control section meets andic soil properties. This draft reflects a change in classification from ashy over paragravelly ashy Typic Cryorthods to ashy Xeric Vitricryands. The family class would be ashy over ashy-pumiceous if provided. The weighted average pumice fragments in the 0.5 to 40.5 inches is 27 percent.
