HACKLING SERIES


The Hackling series consists of shallow, well drained soils that formed in residuum and colluvium derived from interbedded calcareous sandstone and limestone. Hackling soils are on mountains, fan remnants, and structural benches. Slopes range from 5 to 45 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 13 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 43 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, frigid Lithic Calciustepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Hackling gravelly sandy loam, on a north facing, concave, 23 percent slope in pinyon pine and juniper at an elevation of 6,250 feet. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) When described on Septemmber 15, 1994 the soil was moist from 0 to 4 inches.

The surface is covered by 30 percent gravel, 15 percent cobbles, and 2 percent stones.

A--0 to 1 inch; dark reddish brown (2.5YR 4/3) gravelly sandy loam, dark reddish brown (2.5YR 3/3) moist, weak medium platy structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine roots; few very fine vesicular pores; 20 percent gravel; calcium carbonate disseminated; strongly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear smooth boundary. (1 to 3 inches thick)

Bk1--1 to 4 inches; reddish brown (2.5YR 4/4) very gravelly sandy loam, dark reddish brown (2.5YR 3/4) moist, weak very fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many fine and medium roots; few very fine vesicular pores; 35 percent gravel, 5 percent cobbles; calcium carbonate disseminated; 3 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; strongly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 3 inches thick)

Bk2--4 to 15 inches; reddish brown (2.5YR 5/3) extremely cobbly sandy loam, reddish brown (2.5YR 4/3) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine and medium, common coarse roots; few very fine vesicular pores; 40 percent gravel, 25 percent cobbles; 50 percent calcium carbonate coats on rock fragments; calcium carbonate disseminated; 16 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (7 to 16 inches thick)

R--15 inches; Hard fractured calcareous sandstone.

TYPE LOCATION: Moffat County, Colorado; 1,800 feet west and 500 feet south of the northeast corner of section 32, T. 9 N., R. 102 W. USGS Canyon of Lodore North quadrangle; lat. 40 degrees 42 minutes 7 seconds N. and long. 108 degrees 52 minutes 59 seconds W., NAD 1927

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture regime: Ustic moisture regime bordering on Aridic.
Soil temperature regime: frigid
Mean annual soil temperature: 42 to 46 degrees F.
Mean annual summer soil temperature: 63 to 68 degrees F.
Surface rock fragments: 5 to 20 percent sandstone and/or limestone gravel, 2 to 20 percent sandstone and/or limestone cobbles or channers, and 0.1 to 3 percent sandstone and/or limestone stones or flags.
Particle-size control section: 10 to 18 percent clay and 35 to 70 percent sandstone rock fragments.
Depth to lithic contact: 10 to 20 inches to hard sandstone or hard limestone.

A horizon:
Hue: 2.5YR or 5YR
Value: 4 or 5 dry, 3 or 4 moist
Chroma: 2 to 4, dry or moist

Bk horizon:
Hue: 2.5YR or 5YR
Value: 4 to 6 dry, 3 to 5 moist
Chroma: 3 to 6, dry or moist
Texture: sandy loam or loam modified by 35 to 70 percent sandstone gravel and cobbles
Rock fragments: 35 to 70 percent sandstone gravel and cobbles

COMPETING SERIES: This is the Schoonover series.
Schoonover series: has hues 7.5YR or yellower.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Hackling soils.
Parent material: residuum and colluvium derived from interbedded calcareous sandstone and limestone.
Landform: mountains, fan remnants, and structural benches.
Slopes: 5 to 45 percent
Elevation: 5,800 to 8,400 feet
Mean annual air temperature: 42 to 45 degrees F.
Mean annual precipitation: 12 to 15 inches.
Wettest months: Precipitation is relatively evenly distributed throughout the year.
Frost-free period: 75 to 95 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Bondman and Stout series. Both have less than 35 percent rock fragments in the control section.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained, low to medium runoff, moderately rapid permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. Native vegetation is bluebunch wheatgrass, Wyoming big sagebrush, Utah juniper, pinyon pine, Sandberg bluegrass, antelope bitterbrush, and needleandthread.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwestern Colorado. LRR E, D, MLRA 47, 34. This series is of small extent.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Moffat county (Dinosaur National Monument), Colorado, 1997. The name is taken from a geographic location in Dinosaur National Monument.

Ochric epipedon: The zone from 0 to 1 inches (A horizon)
Calcic horizon: The zone from 4 to 15 inches (Bk2 horizon)
Lithic contact: The zone starting at 15 inches (R layer)
