JARBIDGE SERIES


The Jarbidge series consists of shallow, somewhat excessively drained soils that formed in residuum and colluvium derived from quartzite and rhyolite. Jarbidge soils are on mountains. Slopes are 30 to 75 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 760 mm and the mean annual temperature is about 5 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive Lithic Haplocryepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Jarbidge extremely stony silt loam--forest land. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) The surface is covered by approximately 15 percent gravel, 20 percent cobbles, and 40 percent stones. A litter of undecomposed pine needles up to 3 cm thick is under the canopy of trees.

A1--0 to 15 cm; pale brown (10YR 6/3) extremely stony silt loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; strong fine granular structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine, fine, few medium and coarse roots; many very fine and fine interstitial pores; 25 percent gravel, 20 percent cobbles, and 30 percent stones; moderately acid (pH 5.6); clear smooth boundary. (10 to 18 cm thick)

A2--15 to 28 cm; pale brown (10YR 6/3) extremely stony loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate fine granular structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine, fine, medium and coarse roots; many very fine interstitial pores; 25 percent gravel, 15 percent cobbles, and 25 percent stones; moderately acid (pH 5.6); clear smooth boundary. (10 to 25 cm thick)

Bw--28 to 48 cm; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) extremely stony sandy loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine, fine, common medium and coarse roots; many very fine interstitial pores; 20 percent gravel, 25 percent cobbles, and 30 percent stones; moderately acid (pH 5.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (15 to 25 cm thick)

R--48 cm; fractured quartzite.

TYPE LOCATION: Elko County, Nevada; on the Humboldt National Forest about 0.25 mile northwest of Coon Creek Summit in the Copper Mountains; approximately 200 feet north and 200 feet east of the southwest corner of section 12, T. 45 N., R. 57 E.; USGS Jarbidge South 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle; latitude 41 degrees 48 minutes 06 seconds N and longitude 115 degrees 29 minutes 58 seconds W; NAD 83.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: Usually moist from late fall through early summer; completely moist for more than 150 days following the winter solstice; completely dry for 45 or more consecutive days from late July to October; xeric soil moisture regime.
Mean annual soil temperature: 5 to 7 degrees C.
Mean summer soil temperature: 6 to 8 degrees C.
Depth to bedrock: 36 to 50 cm to a lithic contact.

Particle-size control section - Clay content: 10 to 18 percent.
Rock fragments: Averages 60 to 85 percent; 20 to 25 percent gravel, 5 to 25 percent cobbles, 25 to 35 percent stones. Lithology of fragments is quartzite or rhyolite.

A horizons
Value: 5 or 6 dry, 3 or 4 moist.
Chroma: 2 through 4, dry or moist.

Bw horizon
Chroma: 2 through 4, dry or moist.
Consistence: Nonsticky and nonplastic or slightly sticky and slightly plastic.

COMPETING SERIES: This are the Caseypeak, Cobblank, Cowood, Hechtman, Hotter, Merino, Pendergrass, and Sigbird series.

Caseypeak soils are dominated by gravel in the particle-size control section and have an ustic moisture regime. Cobblank soils have a udic moisture regime and have mean annual soil temperature of less than 5 degrees C. Cowood soils are dominated by channers in the particle-size control section and have an udic moisture regime. Hechtman soils are dominated by gravel in the particle-size control section, have mean annual soil temperature of 0 to 2 degrees C, and have an udic moisture regime. Hotter soils have a udic moisture regime and have mean annual soil temperature of 1 to 3 degrees C. Merino soils have a udic moisture regime that borders on ustic. Pendergrass soils are dominated by channers in the particle-size control section, have hue of 2.5YR or 5YR, and have an ustic moisture regime. Sigbird soils have an ustic moisture regime.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Jarbidge soils are on mountains. They formed in residuum and colluvium derived from quartzite and rhyolite. Slopes are 30 to 75 percent. Elevations range from 2,445 to 3,025 meters. The climate is subhumid with cold, wet winters and cool, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 630 to 900 mm, the mean annual temperature is 4 to 6 degrees C, and the frost-free period is 50 to 70 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Tusel and Longhike soils. Both soils are greater than 50 cm to bedrock.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Somewhat excessively drained; very high surface runoff; high saturated hydraulic conductivity.

USE AND VEGETATION: Jarbidge soils are used for forest land and wildlife habitat. The present vegetation is mainly limber pine, subalpine fir, snowberry, quaking aspen, and mountain big sagebrush.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northeastern Nevada. These soils are not extensive. MLRA 25.

SERIES PROPOSED: Elko County, Nevada (Humboldt National Forest Area, North Part), 1995. The name is taken from a local historical mining town.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Ochric epipedon - The zone from the soil surface to 18 cm (A1 and part of the A2 horizons).
Cambic horizon - The zone from 28 to 48 cm (Bw horizon).
Particle-size control section - The zone from 25 to 48 cm (Bw horizon and part of the A2 horizon).
Lithic contact - The boundary at 48 cm to underlying hard bedrock (R layer).

The revision of December 2006 updated the taxonomic class from Lithic Eutrocryepts based on the tenth edition of the Keys to Soil Taxonomy, 2006. Further study is needed to determine base saturation in these soils for accurate great group placement.
