LINNE SERIES

The Linne series consists of moderately deep, well drained soils that formed in material weathered from fairly soft shale and sandstone. Linne soils are on hills and have slopes of 5 to 75 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 16 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 59 degrees F.

(4 to 9 inches thick)

A13--14 to 29 inches; gray (10YR 5/1) clay loam, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) moist; weak coarse prismatic structure that parts to medium and coarse angular blocky with much medium granular structure; very hard, friable, sticky and plastic; few very fine roots; many very fine interstitial and few fine and medium tubular pores; 1/3 of horizon is krotovinas 2 to 3 inches across; violently effervescent disseminated lime and many fine lime filaments especially on faces of larger peds; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); gradual wavy boundary. (7 to 16 inches thick)

AC--29 to 32 inches; gray (10YR 5/1) and light gray (10YR 7/1) sandy clay loam, gray (10YR 5/1) and light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) moist; weak coarse and medium angular blocky structure with some coarse granules; very hard, friable, sticky and plastic; few very fine roots; many very fine interstitial and few fine tubular pores; several krotovinas 2 to 3 inches across; violently effervescent, disseminated lime and many distinct lime filaments; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); clear irregular boundary. (2 to 6 inches thick)

C1ca--32 to 36 inches; white (N 8/ and N 10/) fine sandy loam, light gray (10YR 7/2) and very pale brown (10YR 8/2) moist; massive; extremely hard, firm, sticky and plastic; common very fine interstitial and few very fine tubular pores; several krotovinas 2 to 3 inches across; this horizon somewhat discontinuous and variable in thickness, also broken by squirrel holes; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); clear irregular boundary. (0 to 7 inches thick)

C2r--36 to 51 inches; white (N 8/) mudstone, light gray (2.5Y 7/2) and pale yellow (2.5Y 8/4) moist; massive; very hard, firm; common very fine interstitial and few fine tubular pores in cracks; several krotovinas 2 to 3 inches across; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0).

TYPE LOCATION: Santa Barbara County, California; 11 miles SE of Santa Maria; from just north of Solomon Summit 1 1/2 miles south on Union Oil Company road and 750 feet east; latitude 34 degrees 48 degrees 62" N., longitude 120 degrees 21 degrees 06"W., equivalent to center of sec. 4, T.8N., R.33W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to a paralithic contact is 20 to 40 inches. The mean annual soil temperature at a depth of 20 inches is 59 degrees to 64 degrees F., and the soil temperature usually is not below 47 degrees F. at any time. Soil between the depths of about 4 to 12 inches usually is dry all of the time from May until November and usually is moist in some or all parts all the rest of the year. Except for transitional horizons to the paralithic contact, the soil is clay loam or silty clay loam throughout with more than 15 percent fine sand or coarser. Many pedons are moderately high in silt and very fine sand. The profile is weakly to strongly calcareous and is particularly effervescent in the lower part. In some pedons the uppermost few inches may not effervesce. During the summer, cracks 1/4 to 1 inch wide extend from the surface to a depth of 20 inches or more but intersecting slickensides are lacking. Shale or mudstone fragments usually make up 1/2 to 5 percent of the soil volume, but the amount ranges up to 35 percent.

The A horizon is gray, dark gray or very dark gray with chroma closer to 1 than 2. It may have chroma of 2 below depth of about 20 inches. It contains 2 to 6 percent organic matter in the upper part that decreases regularly with increasing depth and is 1 to 2 percent to a depth of 21 to 35 inches. This horizon has moderate or strong granular or subangular blocky structure or weak or moderate angular blocky or weak prismatic structure. It contains few to many thin filaments of lime in the lower part.

The lower part of the profile is an AC, C or Cca horizon or some combination of these horizons. They have value of 6 through 8 and are fine sandy loam, loam or clay loam.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Salinas and San Benito series in the same family and the Nacimiento, Shedd, Sorrento and Zaca series. Salinas, San Benito and Sorrento soils lack a paralithic contact at depths of less than 40 inches. Nacimiento and San Benito soils are brownish with a chroma of 2 or 3 and San Benito soils are not calcareous in the surface horizons. Shedd soils lack mollic epipedons. Zaca soils have more than 35 percent clay.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Linne soils are on mountainous uplands and foothills. Elevations are 100 to 2,200 feet. The soils formed in material weathered from light gray or white, fairly soft shale, and sandstone. Slopes are 5 to 75 percent. The climate is subhumid mesothermal with warm dry summers and cool moist winters. Mean annual precipitation is 12 to 24 inches. Average January temperature is 45 degrees to 55 degrees F., average July temperature is 67 degrees to 79 degrees F., and the mean annual temperature is 55 degrees to 62 degrees F. The average freeze-free season is 200 to 330 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Nacimiento, San Benito and Shedd soils and the Antioch, Diablo, Los Osos and Santa Lucia soils. Antioch soils have argillic horizons with a SAR of more than 13. Diablo soils have more than 35 percent clay and have intersecting slickensides. Los Osos soils have a fine textured argillic horizon. Santa Lucia soils have more than 35 percent rock fragments and a base saturation of 50 to 75 percent.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium to very rapid runoff; moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used for range. Some areas farmed to small grains, related crops, and almonds. Naturalized and native vegetation is annual grasses and forbs, some live oak, and coastal sage.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Scattered throughout the Coast Range from central California to San Diego. The soils are moderately extensive.
