TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic, shallow Xeric Haplodurids
TYPICAL PEDON: Minveno silt loam -- on a nearly level lava flow at 3,1000 feet elevation in rangeland. (Colors are for air-dry soil unless otherwise noted.)
A1--0 to 1 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) silt loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine roots; many fine irregular pores; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 3 inches thick)
A2--1 to 4 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) silt loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak thin and medium platy structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine roots; few fine tubular pores; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); clear smooth boundary. (2 to 6 inches thick)
Bw--4 to 8 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) silt loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak and moderate coarse prismatic structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine roots; few fine tubular pores; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 12 inches thick)
Bkq--8 to 14 inches; white (10YR 8/2) loam, very pale brown (10YR 7/3) moist; massive; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and nonplastic; many fine roots; few fine tubular pores; many fine duripan fragments; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.3); abrupt smooth boundary. (6 to 12 inches thick)
Bkqm--14 to 21 inches; white (10YR 8/2) continuous, indurated duripan, light gray (10YR 7/2) moist; pan occurs in thick plates; brown (7.5YR 5/4) root mat on upper surface; strongly effervescent; strongly alkaline (pH 8.6). (3 to 18 inches thick)
2R--21 inches; basalt.
TYPE LOCATION: Elmore County, Idaho; about 7 miles southeast of Mountain Home; 20 feet west and 2,600 feet south of northeast corner of section 33, T.4 S., R.7 E.; USGS Reverse Quadrangle; (Latitude- 43 degrees, 01 minutes, 57 seconds N. and Longitude - 115 degrees, 37 minutes, 02 seconds W.).

Average annual soil temperature - 48 to 55 degrees F.
Moisture control section - moist less than 90 consecutive days when the soi temperature is greater than 47 degrees F.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Arritola (T), Besslen, Chiara, Coltroop, Frohman, Gremmers (T), Nevoyer, OToole, Peeko, Plegomir, Scoon, Tenvorrd, and Yahoo series. Arritola soils have Bw horizons with 25 to 35 percent clay. Besslen soils have more than 15 percent rock fragments in the particle-size control section. Chiara soils have over 40 inches to bedrock. Coltroop soils average 20 to 30 percent clay in the control section. Frohman soils have a thin duripan that is rippable, and bedrock is deeper than 40 inches. Gremmers soils lack bedrock below the duripan. Nevoyer soils have bedrock within a depth of 20 inches. OToole soils are somewhat poorly drained. Peeko soils have 15 to 35 percent gravel and 18 to 27 percent clay in the control section. Plegomir soils lack bedrock below the duripan. Scoon soils have more than 15 percent fine sand and coarser particles, with up to 35 percent gravel. Tenvorrd and Truvar soils are greater than 40 inches deep to bedrock. Yahoo soils have 20 to 30 percent clay in the control section.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Minveno soils are on hills, buttes, pressure ridges, tumuli, plus domes (bettes), lava flow lobes and structural benches on lava plains and shield volcanoes, calderas, structural benches, and terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 20 percent. The soils formed in silty alluvium from loess and weathered volcanic ash. Elevations are 2,900 to 5,000 feet. The average annual precipitation is 8 to 12 inches. The average annual temperature is 46 to 53 degrees F. The frost-free period is 95 to 150 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Minidoka and Scism soils. Minidoka soils are moderately deep to the duripan. Scism soils have a weakly cemented layer between 15 and 30 inches, and are deep to bedrock. Minidoka and Scism soils are on landscape positions similar to Minveno soils.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow or medium runoff; moderate permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Minveno soils are used mainly for rangeland, wildlife habitat, and irrigated cropland. Vegetation in the potential natural plant community is bluebunch wheatgrass, Sandberg bluegrass, Thurber needlegrass and Wyoming big sagebrush. Principle irrigated crops are alfalfa hay, barley, dry beans and peas, wheat, corn, and corn silage.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southwestern and southcentral Idaho; MLRA 11. The series is of moderate extent.

Indurated duripan - the zone from 14 to 21 inches (Bkqm horizon)
Particle-size control section - the zone from 0 to 14 inches (whole soil)
Soil moisture regime - aridic bordering xeric
Geographic setting - terms used throughout MLRA 11 to identify the setting of this soil are quite varied although all equate to the same landscape. There will be further investigation from an MLRA project level as to the accepted terms for use.
The term silty alluvium used in this series concept infers a localized influence on the mixed loess and weathered volcanic ash mantle by overland flow of running water.
