PISTOLRIVER SERIES
The Pistolriver series consists of very deep, somewhat poorly drained soils that have formed in alluvium derived from mixed sources. Pistolriver soils are on flood plains. Slopes are 0 to 3 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 2030 millimeters (80 inches) and mean annual temperature is about 12 degrees C (54 degrees F).

TYPICAL PEDON: Pistolriver very fine sandy loam, pasture. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise noted.)
A1--0 to 15 centimeters (0 to 6 inches); very dark grayish brown (2.5Y 3/2) very fine sandy loam, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) dry; moderate very fine and fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine and very fine roots; many very fine and fine continuous tubular pores; 5 percent gravel; moderately acid (pH 6.0); clear smooth boundary.
A2--15 to 28 centimeters (6 to 11 inches); very dark grayish brown (2.5Y 3/2) very fine sandy loam, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) dry; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine continuous tubular pores; 10 percent gravel; moderately acid (pH 6.0); clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the A horizon ranges from 25 to 38 centimeters)
Bw1--28 to 41 centimeters (11 to 16 inches); very dark grayish brown (2.5Y 3/2) gravelly very fine sandy loam, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) dry; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine continuous tubular pores; many fine distinct olive brown (2.5Y 4/4) masses of iron accumulation; 20 percent gravel; slightly acid (pH 6.1); clear smooth boundary.
Bw2--41 to 64 centimeters (16 to 25 inches); dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) gravelly very fine sandy loam, light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) dry; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine continuous tubular pores; many fine distinct olive brown (2.5Y 4/4) masses of iron accumulation; 25 percent gravel, 5 percent cobbles; slightly acid (pH 6.2); abrupt smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bw horizon ranges from 30 to 64 centimeters))
2C1--64 to 81 centimeters (25 to 32 inches); dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) extremely gravelly coarse sand, light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) dry; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine discontinuous tubular pores; 60 percent gravel, 15 percent cobble; slightly acid (pH 6.5); abrupt smooth boundary.
2C2--81 to 94 centimeters (32 to 37 inches); dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) very gravelly loamy sand, light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) dry; single grain; loose; nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine discontinuous tubular pores; 40 percent gravel, 15 percent cobbles; slightly acid (pH 6.5); abrupt smooth boundary.
2C3--94 to 152 centimeters (37 to 60 inches); dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) extremely gravelly coarse loamy sand, light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) dry; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine and fine discontinuous tubular pores; 50 percent gravel, 20 percent cobbles; slightly acid (pH 6.5). TYPE LOCATION: Curry County, Oregon; located about 320 meters (1050 feet) north and 61 meters (200 feet) east of the southwest corner of section 35, T. 40 S., R. 13 W., W.M. (Latitude 42 degrees, 03 minutes, 59 seconds N, Longitude 124 degrees, 13 minutes, 15 seconds W)
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil Moisture: The soils are usually moist, and are dry for less than 45 consecutive days in all parts between depths of 10 to 30 centimeters (4 and 12 inches) in the four months following the summer solstice. The soil has a udic soil moisture regime.
Soil Temperature: The mean annual soil temperature is 12 to 15 degrees C (54 to 59 degrees F). The difference between the mean winter and mean summer soil temperatures varies from 3 to 6 degrees C. The soil has an isomesic soil temperature regime.
Mollic epipedon is 25 to 50 centimeters (10 to 20 inches) thick.
Depth to the contrasting 2C horizon is 50 to 76 centimeters (20 to 30 inches).
Reaction: slightly or moderately acid throughout.
Base Saturationis greater than 50 percent based on lab data Pedon ID #02CA-023-007, Jollygiant mapped in the same Smith River area.

Texture of fine earth: stratified loamy sand and sand with lenses to silt loam.
Clay content: 0 to 5 percent.
Rock fragments: 50 to70 percent gravel and 10 to 20 percent cobbles.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in this family at this time.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Pistolriver soils are on flood plains. Slopes are 0 to 3 percent. The soils formed in alluvium derived from mixed sources. Elevations are 6 to 24 meters (20 to 79 feet). The climate is humid, characterized by warm wet winters and warm moist summers with fog. A strong marine influence limits the diurnal and annual range of temperature. The mean annual temperature is 11 to 14 degrees C (52 to 57 degrees F). The mean annual precipitation is 1778 to 2286 millimeters (70 to 90 inches). The frost-free period is 270 to 330 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Bagnell,
Bayside,
Bigriver, and
Ettersburg, soils. Bagnell and Ettersburg soils do not have contrasting textures and are well drained. Bayside and Bigriver soils lack cambic horizons.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Somewhat poorly drained; very high runoff; moderately high to high saturated hydraulic conductivity to a depth of about 64 centimeters (25 inches) and high saturated hydraulic conductivity below. An apparent high water table fluctuates between depths of 25 to 50 centimeters (10 and 20 inches) from November to April.
USE AND VEGETATION: The soils are used mainly for pasture. Native vegetation is Douglas fir, redwood, grand fir, California laurel, red alder, willow, bigleaf maple, salmonberry, western brackenfern, and sedges.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Coastal Redwood Belts; MLRA 4B. The series is of small extent.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Curry County, Oregon; 1995. The source of the name is a coastal river in Curry County.
REMARKS: Soil classified using the 11th Edition of the Keys to Soil Taxonomy. Previously classified using the 7th Edition as a Coarse-loamy over sandy or sandy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, nonacid, isomesic Aeric Humaquept. This soil was first correlated as a Coarse-loamy over sandy or sandy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, nonacid, isomesic Aeric Tropaquent in 1995, Formerly classified as coarse-loamy over sandy or sandy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, nonacid, isomesic Aeric Tropaquepts, competing series not updated at that time of reclassification.
Diagnostic horizons and features in this pedon include:
Mollic epipedon - from the surface to a depth of 28 centimeters (11 inches) base saturation (by NH4OAc) is greater than 50 percent. (A1, and A2 horizons)
Cambic horizon - from a depth of 28 to 64 centimeters (16 to 25 inches) (Bw1 and Bw2 horizon).
Aquepts suborder - Matrix with a chroma of 2 within 50 centimeters of the soil surface with redoximorphic concentrations (Bw1, Bw2 horizons).
