TORDIA SERIES
The Tordia series consists of soils that are deep to weathered mudstone and
Sandstone from sediments like the Jackson Group. They are well drained, very slowly permeable soils that formed in clayey material over materials weathered from mudstone and sandstone containing volcanic ash and shards. These nearly level to moderately sloping soils are on side slopes, shoulders and summits of broad interfluves. Slopes range from 0 to 8 percent.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, hyperthermic Typic Haplusterts

2Cd--112 to 152 cm (44 to 60 in); light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) weakly consolidated mudstone that has silty clay texture that fractures conchoidally, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) moist; few lenses of sand in horizon; few cracks filled with soil from above; few very fine and fine concretions of calcium carbonate; moderately alkaline.
TYPE LOCATION: Wilson County, Texas; From the intersection of U. S. Highway 181 and Farm Road 541 in Poth; 7 miles west on Farm Road 541; 5.4 miles south of DeWees on Farm Road 1344; east of road in small triangular-shaped pasture.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil Moisture: A typic ustic moisture regime. The soil moisture control section is dry in some or all parts for more than 90 days but less than 180 cumulative days in normal years. June through August and December through February are the driest months. These soils are intermittently moist in September through November and March through May.
Solum thickness: 100 to 160 cm (40 to 60 in)
Vertic features: Cracks 3 to 5 cm (1 to 2 in) wide at the surface extend to the Cr
horizon and are more than 1 cm (1/4 in) wide at depths of 50 cm (20 in).

COMPETING SERIES: These are the
Buchel (TX),
Danjer (TX),
Lattas (TX),
Monteola (TX), and
Rosenbrock (TX) series. Similar soils include Coy (TX), Dosrios (TX), Eloso (TX), and Esseville (TX) series.
The Buchel, Danjer, Lattas, and Monteola soils: are very deep soils
Rosenbrock soils: are calcareous in the solum.
Coy soils: have an argillic horizon.
Eloso soils: are moderaltely deep to paralithic contact
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Parent material: clayey alluvium over residuum weathered from weakly consolidated mudstone, or sandstone that contains volcanic ash and shards
Landform: broad interfluves
Slope: 1 to 5 percent
Mean annual temperature: 21 to 23 degrees C(69 to 73 degrees F)
Mean annual precipitation: 660 to 860 mm (26 to 34 in)
Frost-free period: 270 to 285 days

Thornthwaite annual P-E indices: 38 to 42
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Coy,
Dosrios,
Esseville,
Fashing (TX),
Monteola and
Weigang (TX) series. Coy soils: are at slightly lower elevations and they have Bt horizons. Dosrios and Monteola soils: are very deep soils on similar surfaces.Esseville soils: are moderately deep to densic materials and have a gypsic horizon within 100 cmFashing and Weigang soils: are at higher elevations and are shallow to densic or paralithic contact.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Permeability is very slow. Runoff is
low on 0 to 1 percent slopes, medium on 1 to 3 percent slopes, high on 3 to 5
percent slopes, and very high on 5 to 8 percent slopes. Water enters the soil
rapidly when it is dry and cracked, and very slowly when it is moist.
USE AND VEGETATION: Areas are used for cropland, pastureland and rangeland.
Cultivated crops are mostly corn, grain sorghums, cotton, and wheat. Range
consists of Texas cupgrass, plains bristlegrass, plains lovegrass trichloris,
sideoats grama, vine-mesquite, mesquite, agarita, and cacti, plus annual weeds
and grasses. Pasture is mainly coastal bermudagrass. The ecological site is Rolling Blackland 18-25 PZ(RO83A***)
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northern Rio Grande Plain of Texas (MLRA 83A). The series is of moderate extent.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Temple, Texas
