Warpaint soils are on uplands and have slopes of 0 to 15 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 11 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 43 degrees F..

(4 to 8 inches thick)

2Bt2--18 to 28 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/4) clay loam, strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) dry; moderate very fine subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; common fine roots; few fine tubular pores; common distinct discontinuous clay films on faces of peds; 1/4 inch vertical cracks in matrix; 5 percent gravel; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear wavy boundary. (8 to 12 inches thick)

2Btk1--28 to 38 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/4) gravelly clay loam, strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) dry; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; common distinct discontinuous clay films on faces of peds; 15 percent gravel; strongly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); clear wavy boundary. (8 to 12 inches thick)

2Btk2--38 to 53 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/4) clay, strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) dry; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, very firm, very sticky and very plastic; common prominent discontinuous clay films on faces of peds; 10 percent gravel; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); clear wavy boundary. (12 to 18 inches thick)

2Btk3--53 to 60 inches; reddish brown (5YR 4/4) gravelly clay, yellowish red (5YR 5/6) dry; massive; hard, firm, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; common distinct discontinuous clay films on faces of peds; 30 percent gravel; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8).

TYPE LOCATION: Crook County, Oregon; About 2 miles north of Hampton Butte, Oregon; 2,600 feet west and 600 feet north of the SE corner of section 14. T.20S., R.20E. Latitude 43 degrees, 49 minutes, 86 seco9nds North; Longitude 120 degrees, 17 minutes, 27 seconds West NAD 83.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The soil moisture control section is dry for one-half to three-fourths of the time when the soil temperature is greater than 41 degrees F. The mean annual soil temperature is 44 to 47 degrees F.. Depth to bedrock is greater than 60 inches. Depth to carbonates is 25 to 35 inches. The thickness of the mollic epipedon and depth to the argillic horizon is 10 to 15 inches. There is an absolute clay increase of 25 percent or more between AB and 2Bt horizons.

The A and AB horizon has value of 3 or 2 moist, 4 or 5 dry and chroma of 2 or 3 moist and dry. It has 10 to 30 percent glass and acid oxalate aluminum plus one-half the iron is 0.4 to 0.6 percent. Clay content is 10 to 18 percent.

The 2Bt horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 5Y moist or dry and value of 4 or 5 moist, 5 or 6 dry and chroma of 2 or 3 moist or dry. It is clay loam and clay with 35 to 50 percent clay and 0 to 15 percent gravel.

The 2Btk horizon has a hue of 7.5YR or 5Y moist or dry and value of 4 or 5 moist, 5 or 6 dry and chroma of 4 or 5 moist and 6 through 8 dry. It is clay and clay loam with 35 to 45 percent clay and 10 to 35 percent gravel.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Booth, Campcreek, Carryback, Crowcamp, Golars, Hankins, Jesh, Joenchris, Lacrol, Tippett and Zumwalt series. The Booth, Campcreek, Golars, Hankins, Jesh, Joenchris, Lacrol, Tippett and Zumwalt series have a xeric moisture regime. Carryback soils are 20 to 40 inches deep to bedrock and lack the surface ash influence. Crowcamp soils have a hard, brittle layer at 25 to 40 inches and have a watertable at 2.5 to 5.0 feet in the spring.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Warpaint soils are on uplands at elevations of 4,000 to 5,000 feet. These soils formed in residuum from John Day Formation tuffaceous sediments with an influence of volcanic ash in the surface. The climate is characterized by cool, moist winters and hot, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 10 to 12 inches, the meam annual temperature is 40 to 46 degrees F., and the frost-free period is 40 to 70 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Dester, Embal, Beden, Borobey, Swalesilver, Swaler, Anatone and Ateron soils. Dester soils are moderately deep to bedrock. Embal soils are coarse-loamy and are on stream terraces. Beden soils are shallow to bedrock. Borobey soils are ashy to below 40 inches and are on depressional areas. Swalesilver and Swaler soils are on lake terraces. Anatone and Ateron soils are shallow to bedrock and are on south-facing aspect hillslopes.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; permeability is slow.

USE AND VEGETATION: Warpaint soils are used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. The native vegetation is low sagebrush, Western juniper, Idaho fescue and Sandbergs bluegrass .

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central Oregon; MLRA 23. This series is not extensive.
