ZUNIVEN SERIES

The Zuniven series consists of very deep, moderately well drained, moderately slowly permeable soils that formed in alluvium and stream alluvium derived from sandstone and shale on flood plains. Mean annual precipitation is about 11 inches and mean annual temperature is about 52 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-silty, mixed, superactive, calcareous, mesic Aridic Ustifluvents

TYPICAL PEDON: Zuniven loamy fine sand--wildlife land on a linear surface of 2 percent slope at an elevation of 6,450 feet. (Colors are for dry soils unless otherwise noted.)

A--0 to 6 inches; reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/6) loamy fine sand, strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) moist; single grain; loose, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine and common fine roots; common very fine irregular pores; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); abrupt wavy boundary. (3 to 6 inches thick)

C1--6 to 12 inches; reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/6) loamy fine sand, strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) moist; single grain; loose, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine and common fine roots; common very fine irregular pores; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (2 to 17 inches thick)

C2--12 to 17 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) silty clay loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) moist; massive; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine and few coarse roots; common fine irregular and few fine tubular pores; strongly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (5 to 20 inches thick)

C3--17 to 22 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) silt loam, brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; massive; soft, very friable, nonsticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine roots; common fine irregular and few fine tubular pores; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (2 to 30 inches thick)

C4--22 to 33 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) silt loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; massive; soft, very friable, nonsticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine and few medium roots; common fine irregular and few fine tubular pores; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (10 to 30 inches thick)

C5--33 to 42 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) silty clay loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; massive; soft, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine and fine roots; common irregular and few fine tubular pores; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (15 to 27 inches thick)

C6--42 to 65 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) loamy fine sand, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; single grain; loose, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine and fine roots; few fine irregular pores; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6). (15 to 20 inches thick)

TYPE LOCATION: McKinley County, Zuni Indian Reservation, New Mexico; Zuni Quadrangle; about 1 mile east and slightly north of the Blackrock Reservoir Dam; 108 degrees 46 minutes 11 seconds west longitude, 35 degrees 5 minutes 48 seconds north latitude.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:

Soil Moisture: The SMCS is usually moist, in all parts for less than 90 cumulative days from April through October. It is usually dry, in some part, for more than 120 cumulative days during the same period. Intermittently moist in some part November through March, but not moist in all parts for 45 consecutive days from January through April. The period of maximum precipitation is July through October. The soil is driest during May and June. Aridic ustic moisture regime.

Soil Temperature: 51 to 56 degrees F

Particle size control section: 20 to 35 percent clay, less than 15 percent coarser than very fine sand

A horizon:
Hue: 7.5YR or 10YR
Value: 3 through 6 dry, 3 through 5 moist
Chroma: 4 through 8

C horizon:
Hue: 7.5YR or 10YR
Value: 4 through 6 dry, 3 through 6 moist
Chroma: 3 through 6
Texture: Highly stratified loamy fine sand, silt loam, silty clay loam, and clay loam.

COMPETING SERIES: This the Interior (SD)series. Interior soils are well drained, have SAR greater than 10, and are in LRR-G and are moist in May and June.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Zuniven soils formed in alluvium and stream alluvium derived from sandstone and shale and are on flood plains. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent slopes. Elevations range from 6200 to 6500 feet. The mean annual temperature is 49 to 54 degrees F., and the mean annual precipitation is 10 to 13 inches. This soil receives several inches additional moisture through capillary rise and as run-on from adjacent areas. The frost free period is 120 to 140 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Aparejo, Venadito, and Ojocal soils on flood plains; and the Flugle and Fragua soils on fan terraces. Aparejo soils are fine-loamy and have hues redder than 7.5YR. Venadito soils are very-fine and have vertic properties. Ojocal soils have hues redder than 7.5YR. Flugle and Fragua soils have argillic horizons.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well drained, medium runoff, and moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: This unit is used as wildlife land. Present vegetation is cottonwood, willows, Russian olives, shrubs and grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: West central New Mexico. MLRA 35, LRR-D. This series is of small extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Phoenix, Arizona
