COMPETING SERIES: These are the
Cedaran and
Thimble series.
Cedaran soils have an AB horizon and lake ashy modifiers in the argillic horizon.Thimble soils have identifiable secondary carbonates in the particle-size control section.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Acti soils are on mountains. These soils formed in residuum and colluvium derived from welded tuff. Slopes are 15 to 50 percent. Elevations range from 1,450 to 2,050 meters. The climate is dry, sub-humid with cool, moist winters and warm, intermittently moist summers. The mean annual precipitation is 300 to 400 mm, the mean annual air temperature is 7 to 11 degrees C, and the frost-free period is 100 to 130 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Turba and
Motoqua soils. Turba and Motoqua soils are loamy-skeletal.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained; very high surface runoff; moderately low saturated hydraulic conductivity.
USE AND VEGETATION: Acti soils are used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. The potential native vegetation is Gamble's oak, Utah serviceberry, Mojave ceanothus, greenleaf manzanita, mountain big sagebrush, muttongrass, prairie junegrass, and some singleleaf pinyon and Utah juniper. This pedon is correlated to ecological site R29XY164NV, Gravelly Clay Slope 12-14 P.Z.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southeastern Nevada. These soils are moderately extensive. MLRA 29.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Davis, California.
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Lincoln County, Nevada, South Part, 1992.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Mollic epipedon - The zone from the surface to 46 cm (A, Bt1, Bt2, and Bt3 horizons).
Argillic horizon - The zone from 5 to 46 cm (Bt1, Bt2, and Bt3 horizons).
Lithic contact - The zone from 46 cm to a lithic contact (R layer).
Particle-size control section - The zone from 5 to 46 cm (Bt1, Bt2, and Bt3 horizons).
The revision of December 2006 updated the taxonomic class from the subgroup of Lithic Argiustolls due to the soil having an ustic moisture regime that borders on aridic.
