ALBION SERIES

The Albion series consists of very deep, somewhat excessively drained or well drained, moderately rapidly permeable soils on paleo-terraces in river valleys of the Great Bend Sand Plains (MLRA 79). They formed in loamy Quaternary sediments over sandy alluvium that is at depths of 20 to 40 inches (50 to 102 centimeters). Slopes range from 0 to 15 percent. Mean annual temperature is 57 degrees F (14 degrees C). Mean annual precipitation is 29 inches (74 centimeters).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Udic Argiustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Albion sandy loam on a west-facing 3 percent slope in a native grass pasture. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 9 inches (0 to 23 centimeters); brown (7.5YR 5/3), interior, sandy loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/3), interior, moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and nonplastic; common very fine roots throughout; 12 percent clay; noneffervescent throughout (HCl, 1 normal); 1 percent subrounded mixed gravel; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary. (6 to 12 inches thick; 15 to 30 centimeters thick)

Bt1--9 to 16 inches (23 to 41 centimeters); brown (7.5YR 5/3), interior, sandy loam, brown (7.5YR 4/3), interior, moist; weak medium prismatic structure parting to weak medium subangular blocky; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine roots throughout; 16 percent clay; few distinct discontinuous brown (7.5YR 4/4), moist, clay films on faces of peds and in pores and few distinct discontinuous clay bridging between sand grains; noneffervescent throughout (HCl, 1 normal); 2 percent subrounded mixed gravel; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

Bt2--16 to 27 inches (41 to 69 centimeters); reddish brown (5YR 5/4), interior, coarse sandy loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/4), interior, moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and nonplastic; few very fine roots throughout; 13 percent clay; very few faint patchy reddish brown (5YR 4/4), moist, clay films on faces of peds and in pores and few faint patchy clay bridging between sand grains; noneffervescent throughout (HCl, 1 normal); 5 percent subrounded mixed gravel; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary. (4 to 20 inches thick; 10 to 50 centimeters thick)

BC--27 to 48 inches (69 to 122 centimeters); light brown (7.5YR 6/4), interior, loamy coarse sand, brown (7.5YR 5/4), interior, moist; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure parting to single grain; loose, loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; 5 percent clay; noneffervescent throughout (HCl, 1 normal); 10 percent subrounded mixed gravel; neutral; gradual smooth boundary. (0 to 28 inches thick; 0 to 71 centimeters thick)

C--48 to 80 inches (122 to 203 centimeters); pale brown (10YR 6/3), interior, sand, brown (10YR 5/3), interior, moist; single grain; loose, loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; 1 percent clay; noneffervescent throughout (HCl, 1 normal); 5 percent subrounded mixed gravel; slightly alkaline.

ALBION SERIES LRR=H 6/4/90

1. Added "very deep" in the first paragraph.
2. Added wet consistence to the typical pedon description.
3. Removed all non-competing series from the competing series section.
4. Made some minor changes to the geographic associated soils section.

12/10/99
1. Series was modified to mesic due to the final correlation of the Reno County, Kansas soil survey.
