ALDERMAND SERIES


The Aldermand series consists of very deep, well-drained soils that
formed in mixed volcanic ash and material from granitic or metamorphic rock. Aldermand soils are on mountains and canyons and have slopes of 35 to 85 percent. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is moderately high in the upper part and rapid in the lower part. The average annual precipitation is about 30 inches, and the average annual air temperature is about 42 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, isotic, frigid Vitrandic Eutrudepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Aldermand ashy loam, forested, on a 65 percent slope on a northeasterly aspect at an elevation of 2,120 feet. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

Oi--0 to 1 inch; slightly decomposed needles, leaves, and twigs.

Oe--1 to 2 inches; fresh and moderately decomposed needles, leaves, and twigs.

A--2 to 7 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/3) ashy loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/3) moist; weak fine granular structure; loose, slightly sticky and nonplastic; many very fine and common fine and medium roots throughout; many very fine and fine and few medium irregular pores; 2 percent fine rounded iron-manganese concretions; 2 percent fine mica flakes; 3 percent fine gravel; neutral (pH 7.2); clear smooth boundary. (1 to 8 inches thick)

Bw1--7 to 12 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/3) ashy loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/3) moist; weak very fine and fine subangular blocky structure parting to weak fine granular; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and nonplastic; many very fine, common fine and medium and few coarse roots throughout; many very fine and fine irregular pores; 2 percent fine rounded iron-manganese concretions; 5 percent fine mica flakes; 3 percent fine gravel; neutral (pH 7.1); clear wavy boundary.

Bw2--12 to 17 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) ashy loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak very fine and fine subangular blocky structure parting to moderate fine granular; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and nonplastic; many very fine, common fine, and few coarse roots throughout; many very fine and common fine irregular pores; 2 percent fine rounded iron-manganese concretions; 5 percent fine mica flakes; 5 percent gravel; neutral (pH 6.9); clear wavy boundary. (combined thickness of Bw horizons is 5 to 21 inches thick)

2Bw3--17 to 25 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak very fine, fine and medium subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine and fine and common medium roots; common very fine and few fine irregular and common very fine tubular pores; 5 percent fine mica flakes; 10 percent fine gravel; slightly acid (pH 6.3); gradual wavy boundary. (6 to 31 inches thick)

2BC--25 to 33 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak very fine, fine and medium subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine and few fine and medium roots throughout; common very fine and few fine irregular and common very fine tubular pores; 10 percent fine mica flakes; 10 percent gravel; slightly acid (pH 6.3); gradual wavy boundary. (0 to 35 inches thick)

2C1--33 to 44 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) gravelly sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak very fine and fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine and few fine roots throughout; many very fine and common fine irregular pores; 15 percent fine mica flakes; 25 percent gravel; slightly acid (pH 6.3); gradual wavy boundary.

2C2--44 to 62 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) very stony loamy sand; dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; massive; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine and fine roots throughout; many very fine and common fine irregular pores; 15 percent fine mica flakes; 20 percent gravel, 35 percent stones; slightly acid (pH 6.4).

TYPE LOCATION: Clearwater County, Idaho; about 6 miles north and 1.5 miles iast of Ahsahka, Idaho; about 650 feet north and 1,150 feet east of the southwest corner of sec. 35, T. 38 N., R. 1 E.; Latitude - 46 degrees, 35 minutes, 12 seconds North; Longitude - 116 degrees, 18 minutes, 13 seconds West; USGS Ahsahka Quadrangle.

COMPETING SERIES:
Mannering soils: have low chroma redoximorphic features at a depth of 50 to 100 cm.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Aldermand soils are on canyon and mountain sideslopes at elevations of 1,200 to 4,940 feet (366 to 1506 meters). The slope range is 35 to 85 percent. These soils formed in mixed volcanic ash and material weathered from granitic residuum. The average annual temperature ranges from 41 to 46 degrees F. The average annual precipitation ranges from 27 to 65 inches (686 to 1650 mm) and the frost-free season is 50 to 100 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Crumarine, Kauder (T),
Texascreek and Uvi series. Crumarine soils are in drainageways and are somewhat poorly drained. Kauder soils are on hills, have a volcanic ash mantle and have a fragipan. Texascreek soils are on south and west-facing convex slopes and have a mesic soil temperature regime. Uvi soils are on similar landscapes and are fine-loamy in the particle-size control section.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Runoff is medium to rapid. Permeability is moderate in the upper part and rapid in the lower part.

USE AND VEGETATION: This soil is used primarily for timber production,
livestock grazing, wildlife habitat, recreation, and watershed. The
natural vegetation is mainly western redcedar, grand fir, western
larch, Douglas-fir, Myrtle pachystima, goldthread, common princes pine,
queencup beadlily and sweetscented bedstraw.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: North-central Idaho. Aldermand soils are moderately extensive.
