ANCHORPARK SERIES

The Anchorpark series consists of very deep, somewhat excessively drained soils formed in eolian sands. Anchorpark soils are on dunes. Slopes range from 0 to 85 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 16 inches, and the mean annual temperature is about 36 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Sandy, mixed Typic Dystrocryepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Anchorpark loamy very fine sand - on 49 percent slope under rangeland. (All colors are for moist soil)

Oe--0 to 1 inch; black (7.5YR 2.5/1); moderately decomposed plant material; strongly acid (pH 5.1); abrupt smooth boundary. (1 to 4 inches thick)

E--1 to 4 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) loamy very fine sand; weak fine granular structure; very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine, fine, medium, and coarse roots; strongly acid (pH 5.4); abrupt smooth boundary. (2 to 5 inches thick)

Bw1--4 to 9 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) loamy very fine sand; weak fine subangular blocky structure; very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine, fine, medium, and coarse roots; moderately acid (pH 5.7); clear smooth boundary.

Bw2--9 to 14 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) fine sand; weak very fine subangular blocky structure; very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine, fine, and medium roots; moderately acid (pH 5.9); clear smooth boundary. (The combined thickness of the Bw horizons is 7 to 16 inches thick)

C--14 to 60 inches; very dark grayish brown (2.5Y 3/2) fine sand; single grained; very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; slightly acid (pH 6.3). (36 to 50 inches thick)

TYPE LOCATION: Anchorage Area, Alaska; about 1 mile east of Point Campbell, Alaska; in the NE 1/4 of the SE 1/4, section 6, T. 4 N., R. 4 W.; Tyonek A1NE 1:25,000 quad, Seward Meridian; UTM north 6783960 and UTM east 0600147; zone 6.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:

The E horizon has value of 4 or 5 and chroma of 1 or 2. The texture is loamy very fine sand, very fine sand, or fine sand. Reaction is strongly acid or moderately acid.

The Bw horizons have hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 3 or 4, and chroma of 3 to 6. The texture is loamy very fine sand, fine sand, or very fine sand. Reaction is moderately acid or slightly acid.

The C horizon has value of 2 or 3 and chroma of 1 to 3. The texture is very fine sand, fine sand, or sand.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Beales and Bottle series. The Beales soils have silt loam textures in the A and Bw horizons and have a colder soil temperature. The Bottle soils are 20 to 40 inches deep to sandstone.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Anchorpark soils occur on dunes. Slopes range from 0 to 85 percent. The soils formed in eolian sands. Mean annual temperature ranges from 29 to 43 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 14 to 20 inches.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include Smithfha (T) soils. Smithfha soils are well drained.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat excessively drained, high or very high runoff. Permeability is moderately rapid in the upper part of the solum and rapid in the lower part of the solum and substratum.

USE AND VEGETATION: Wildlife habitat and recreation.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Cook Inlet-Susitna Lowlands. The series is of small extent.

SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (SSRO) RESPONSIBLE: WASILLA, ALASKA

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Anchorage Area, Alaska, 2001

REMARKS: Diagnostic features and horizons recognized in this profile include: albic horizon from 1 to 4 inches; cambic horizons from 4 to 14 inches; weighted average particle size of sandy from 10 to 40 inches; cryic temperature regime.
