ANDERGEORGE SERIES


The Andergeorge series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately rapidly permeable soils that formed in gravelly alluvium from igneous and sedimentary rocks. These soils are on Piedmont slopes. Slope ranges from 1 to 10 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 14 inches, and mean annual temperature is about 54 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, gypsic, mesic Ustic Calcigypsids

TYPICAL PEDON: Andergeorge gravelly fine sandy loam--rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A1--0 to 5 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) gravelly fine sandy loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate fine granular structure; soft, very friable, many fine and very fine roots; 25 percent pebbles; violently effervescent, moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (4 to 9 inches thick)

A2--5 to 9 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) extremely gravelly loam, yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) moist; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and common medium roots; 70 percent pebbles; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 9 inches thick)

Bk--9 to 22 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/4) very gravelly loam, light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine and very fine and fine medium roots; 50 percent pebbles; violently effervescent; strongly alkaline; abrupt wavy boundary. (2 to 13 inches thick)

Bkyl--22 to 42 inches; very pale brown (10YR 8/2) very gravelly sandy loam, very pale brown (10YR 7/3) moist; massive; hard, friable, few fine roots; 50 percent pebbles; many gypsum crystals in pockets 6 to 10 inches in diameter; violently effervescent; slightly alkaline; clear wavy boundary. (10 to 20 inches thick)

Bky2--42 to 65 inches; pink (7.5YR 7/4) extremely gravelly sandy loam, light brown (7.5YR 6/4) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; soft, friable, few fine roots; 70 percent pebbles; gypsum crystals on undersides of pebbles; violently effervescent; slightly alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Lincoln County, New Mexico; approximately 12 miles north northwest of Carrizozo; NW1/4, SW1/4, sec. 22, T. 6 S., R. 10 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil Moisture: Aridic moisture regime bordering on Ustic. Dry in all parts for less than half the year in normal years, and moist in some or all parts for more than 90 consecutive days in normal years. The soil moisture control section is moist for longer periods of time during the summer than the winter.

Soil Temperature: 48 to 59 degrees F.

Depth to calcic horizon: 4 to 15 inches.

Depth to gypsic horizon: 15 to 30 inches.

Control Section: More than 35 percent pebbles

A horizon:
Value: 4 to 6 dry, 3 to 5 moist
Chroma: 2 to 5
Texture: Gravelly or extremely gravelly loam or fine sandy loam.
Calcium carbonate: 5 to 20 percent.
Reaction. Neutral to moderately alkaline

BK horizon:
Hue: 7.5YR or 10YR
Value: 4 to 8 dry, 3 to 7 moist
Chroma: 2 to 5
Texture: Loam or sandy loam with strata of gravelly, very gravelly, extremely gravelly or cobbly loamy sand.
Calcium carbonate: 20 to 50 percent, averaging between 30 and 40 percent.
Gypsum: 1 to 10 percent, averaging less than 5 percent.
Reaction: slightly alkaline to moderately alkaline.

Bky horizon:
Colors and Texture similar to the Bk horizon
Calcium carbonate: 5 to 20 percent.
Gypsum: 5 to 30 percent with 2 to 10 percent visible secondary gypsum in the form of crystals in pockets and on undersides of fragments.
Reaction: slightly alkaline to strongly alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series in the same family.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Andergeorge soils are on piedmont slopes. Slope ranges from 1 to 10 percent. The soils formed in mixed alluvium from adjacent mountains. The mean annual temperature ranges from 50 to 57 degrees F. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 12 to 16 inches. Elevation ranges from 5,000 to 6,500 feet. The frost-free period ranges from 180 to 200 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Darvey, Harvey, Sampson, and Tulargo soils. Darvey and Harvey soils do not have a zone of gypsum accumulation. Sampson soils have a mollic epipedon and occur in swale positions below Andergeorge. Tulargo has less than 15 percent coarse fragments and are on slightly lower positions on nearby landscapes.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Permeability is moderately rapid. Runoff is very low on 1 to 5 percent slopes and low on 5 to 10 percent slopes.

USE AND VEGETATION: Andergeorge soils are used for rangeland. The present vegetation consists of black grama, yucca, Mormon-tea, oneseed juniper, fourwing saltbush, cholla, threeawn, sand dropseed, and galleta.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Andergeorge soils are of moderate extent in south central New Mexico.

Ochric epipedon: 0 to 9 inches. (The A horizon)

Gypsic horizon: 22 to 65 inches. (The Bky horizons)
