TYPE LOCATION: San Miguel County, New Mexico; 1.25 miles southeast of Quintana Spring on Forest Service road 45; NE 1/4 NE 1/4 sec. 7, R. 16 E., T. 12 N.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to bedrock ranges from 60 to more than 80 inches. Gravel consists mainly of caliche, sandstone, and shale.
The A horizon has hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 4 to 6, and chroma
of 2 to 4. Texture is very gravelly loam, gravelly loam, or cobbly
loam.
The Bw horizon has hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 6 to 8, and chroma
of 2 to 4. Texture is loam, light clay loam or sandy clay loam. Pebbles and cobbles range from 35 to 60 percent.
The BC horizon has hue of 5YR or 7.5YR, value of 6 to 7, and chroma of 4 to 5. Texture is light clay loam or sandy loam and contains 35 to 70 percent limestone, shale and sandstone fragments. Rock fragments, mainly gravel, are partially cemented in some pedons.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series in the same family. A similar soil is the Tinaja series. Tinaja soils have a calcic horizon and are dry in the soil moisture control section for slightly longer periods.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Andok soils are on uplands, old alluvial fans, and plains. Slope ranges from 0 to 20 percent. They formed in mixed material derived from soft limestone, calcareous shale and sandstone. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 14 to 18 inches. These soils receive about 75 percent of their moisture as summer showers between May and September. The mean annual temperature ranges from 50 to 54 degrees F. The frost-free season ranges from 140 to 160 days. Elevation ranges from 5,800 to 7,200 feet.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Ribera, Tapia, Teco, Quintana, Sombordoro, and Vibo soils. Ribera, Tapia, Teco, and Vibo soils have an argillic horizon. Quintana soils have less than 35 percent coarse fragments in the particle size control section. Sombordoro soils have a lithic contact at a depth of less than 20 inches.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Permeability is moderate. Runoff is negligible on slopes less than one percent, low on 1 to 5 percent slopes and medium on 5 to 20 percent slopes.
USE AND VEGETATION: Used mainly for range and fuel wood production.
Vegetation is oneseed juniper, pinyon pine, wavyleaf oak, nakeweed, blue rama, black grama, sideoats grama, and sand dropseed.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Mesas and foothills in Northern New Mexico and Arizona. The series is of moderate extent.
