APPLESEED SERIES
The Appleseed series consists of shallow and very shallow somewhat excessively drained soils that formed in alluvium and colluvium from limestone on mountains and hills. Slopes range from 4 to 75 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 5 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 74 degrees F.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, calcareous, hyperthermic Lithic Torriorthents
TYPICAL PEDON: Appleseed extremely cobbly sandy loam - wildlife habitat and recreation. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)
A--0 to 2 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) extremely cobbly sandy loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; weak fine granular structure; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine roots; many very fine irregular pores; 50 percent gravel, 20 percent cobble, 10 percent stone; strongly effervescent, 30 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (1 to 3 inches thick)
Bk--2 to 8 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) extremely cobbly sandy loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine roots; many very fine tubular pores; 50 percent gravel, 20 percent cobble, 10 percent stone; strongly effervescent, 32 percent calcium carbonate equivalent, rock fragments are calcium carbonate coated; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (1 to 3 inches thick)
2R--8 inches; limestone.
TYPE LOCATION: In an unsectionized area. In the general area of latitude 35 degrees, 38 minutes, 07 seconds North and longitude of 113 degrees, 57 minutes, 21 seconds West.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: Intermittently moist in some part of the soil moisture control section during December - February and for less than 20 days cumulative during July - September. Driest during May and June. Typic Aridic soil moisture regime.
Soil temperature: 72 to 80 degrees F.
Rock fragments: more than 35 percent rock fragments made up of a combination of gravel, cobble and stone with more than 5 percent cobble plus stone
Clay content: 7 to 18 percent
Organic matter: less than 1 percent
Effervescence: slight to violent
Reaction: slightly to moderately alkaline
Depth to bedrock: 4 to 20 inches
Calcium carbonate equivalent: 15 to 35 percent
A and Bk horizons
Hue: 10YR, 7.5YR
Value: 5 or 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist
Chroma: 3 or 4, dry or moist
COMPETING SERIES: These are the
Goldroad (AZ),
Hyder (AZ),
Quilotosa (AZ),
Redneedle (NV), and
Sunrock (AZ) soils. Hyder and Quilotosa are intermittently moist for more than 20 days cumulative during July - September. Goldroad, Redneedle, and Sunrock soils have less than 15 percent calcium carbonate equivalent. In addition, Goldroad is formed over granite parent material, Redneedle over sandstone conglomerate and has less than 5 percent cobble plus stone, and Sunrock over andesite or related volcanic rock.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Appleseed soils are on hills and mountains at elevations of 1,100 to 2,000 feet. Slopes range from 4 to 75 percent. These soils formed in colluvium and alluvium from limestone. The mean annual precipitation is 3 to 6 inches. The mean annual air temperature is 70 to 78 degrees F. The frost-free period is 280 to 320 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Carrizo and
Huevi soils. Carrizo soils are sandy-skeletal and very deep. Huevi soils are very deep and loamy-skeletal.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat excessively drained; very high runoff; moderately rapid permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Used for wildlife habitat and recreation. Vegetation includes white bursage, creosotebush, white brittlebush, Mormon-tea and opuntia.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwestern Arizona. Appleseed soils are of limited extent. MLRA is 30.
