BADGERPASS SERIES


The Badgerpass series consists of very deep, somewhat excessively drained soils that formed in colluvium, alluvium, and/or till from granitoid rock. Badgerpass soils are on mountain slopes, on moraines, mountain valleys, and on ridges. Slope is 0 to 45 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 42 inches (1,067 millimeters) and the mean annual temperature is about 50 degrees F (9.8 degrees C).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Sandy, isotic, frigid Humic Dystroxerepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Badgerpass loamy coarse sand, on a west southwest facing 25 percent slope under a cover of Whitethorn at an elevation of 6,760 feet (2060.5 meters). When described the soil was moist throughout. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted).

Oi--0 to 2 inches, (0 to 4 centimeters); slightly decomposed plant material; 1 percent subangular very strongly cemented granitoid rock fragments 2 to 75 millimeters in size. (0 to 2 inches [0 to 4 centimeters] thick)

A--2 to 7 inches, (4 to 18 centimeters); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) loamy coarse sand, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; weak medium subangular blocky and weak medium granular structure; soft, very friable, non-sticky, non-plastic; common fine and very fine and few coarse and medium roots; 5 percent subangular very strongly cemented granitoid rock fragments 2 to 75 millimeters in size; neutral (pH 6.6); abrupt irregular boundary. C3--55 to 67 inches, (139 to 169 centimeters); light gray (2.5Y 7/2) gravelly coarse sand, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) moist; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; loose, loose, non-sticky, non-plastic; few fine, medium, and very fine roots; 25 percent subangular very strongly cemented granitoid rock fragments 2 to 75 millimeters in size; strongly acid (pH 5.5).

TYPE LOCATION: Mariposa County, California; Tamarack Creek/Merced River, 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) east of Gin Flat on Tioga Road Burn Area, 200 feet (61.0 meters) east and 100 feet (30.5 meters) north of the southwest corner of section 2, T. 2 S., R. 20 E., Mount Diablo Base and Meridian; Latitude 37 degrees, 46 minutes, 54.4 seconds and Longitude 119 degrees, 44 minutes, 27.4 seconds west, USGS Tamarack Flat, California Quadrangle, NAD83.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is less than 8.0 degrees C (46.4 degrees F). The particle size control section has 0.4 to 4 percent clay and 75 to 98 percent sand. Rock fragment content is 0 to 40 percent, by volume. The particle size control section by weighted average has less than 35 percent rock fragments. Some pedons do not have one or more O horizons. The content of surface rock fragments is 0 to 14 percent.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series at this time.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Badgerpass soils are on mountain slopes, moraines, mountain valleys, and ridges. Slope is 0 to 45 percent. Elevation is 4,477 to 8,196 feet (1,364 to 2,498.2 meters). These soils formed in alluvium, colluvium and/or till derived from granitoid rock. The climate is Mediterranean with moist and cold winters and warm and dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 35 to 49 inches (889 to 1,245 millimeters). Mean annual temperature is 48 to 51 degrees F (8.9 to 10.6 degrees C). Frost-free period is 20 to 60 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These soils are Canisrocks, Craneflat, and Nevadafalls. Canisrocks soils have a cryic temperature regime. Craneflat soils have a sandy-skeletal particle-size class. Nevadafalls soils have a coarse-loamy particle-size class.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat excessively drained or excessively drained; very low to medium runoff; saturated hydraulic conductivity is high or very high.

USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for watershed and recreation in Yosemite National Park. The vegetation is chaparral, mixed coniferous forest, white fir, Jeffrey pine, red fir, lodgepole pine, Douglas fir, and Ponderosa pine.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: These soils are in the Sierra Nevada in and near Yosemite National Park. The soils of this series are of small extent, about 9,000 acres (3,642 hectares) in size. MLRA 22A.

REMARKS: Isotic mineralogy class based on lab data. Badgerpass soils have an umbric epipedon. Holland and Fish and Game, State of California, 1986 is White Fir Mixed Coniferous Forest (84232), Sierra Mixed Coniferous Forest (84230), Montane Chaparral (37500), Ponderosa Pine Mixed Coniferous Forest (84231), and Sierra White Fir Forest (84240), Jeffrey Pine Forest (85110), Upper Moutain Mixed Coniferous Forest (85200), Red Fir Forest (85310), Lodgepole Pine Forest (86110), Jeffrey Pine-Fir Forest (85210), and Douglas Fir Mixed Coniferous Forest (84233).
