TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, superactive, frigid Pachic Argiustolls
TYPICAL PEDON: Bandarito clay loam, on a south facing, convex, 4 percent slope in grass at an elevation of 7,980 feet. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) When described on July 14, 1993 the soil was moist from 0 to 20 inches.
A--0 to 3 inches; dark gray (10YR 4/1) clay loam, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; neutral (pH 7.2); abrupt smooth boundary. (3 to 8 inches thick)
Bt1--3 to 12 inches; dark gray (10YR 4/1) silty clay loam, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) moist; moderate medium prismatic structure parting to strong fine subangular blocks; extremely hard, firm, sticky and plastic; common continuous clay films on faces of peds; neutral (pH 6.8); abrupt wavy boundary.
Bt2--12 to 18 inches; dark gray (10YR 4/1) silty clay, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) moist; strong medium prismatic structure parting to strong fine medium blocks; extremely hard, very firm, very sticky and very plastic; common continuous clay films on faces of peds; neutral (pH 7.0); clear smooth boundary.
Bt3--18 to 29 inches; dark gray (10YR 4/1) silty clay, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) moist; strong coarse prismatic structure parting to strong coarse blocks; extremely hard, very firm, very sticky and very plastic; many continuous clay films on faces of peds; neutral (pH 6.8); gradual wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of Bt horizons is 20 to 30 inches)
Btk1--29 to 35 inches; dark gray (10YR 4/1) clay, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; strong coarse prismatic structure parting to strong coarse blocks; extremely hard, very firm, very sticky and very plastic; common continuous clay films on faces of peds; common medium soft masses of lime; slightly effervescent (1 percent calcium carbonate equivalent); slightly alkaline (pH 7.5); clear smooth boundary.
Btk2--35 to 40 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) clay, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, very firm, very sticky and very plastic; few continuous clay films on faces of peds; common fine irregular soft masses of lime; slightly effervescent (2 percent calcium carbonate equivalent); slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of Btk horizons is 8 to 12 inches)
Btk3--40 to 56 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) silty clay, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; few thin clay films on faces of peds; common medium irregular lime occurs in seams and soft masses; slightly effervescent (2 percent calcium carbonate equivalent); slightly alkaline (pH 7.5); clear smooth boundary. (9 to 16 inches thick)
Bk--56 to 66 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) clay loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; massive; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; common fine irregular lime occurs in seams and soft masses; violently effervescent (1 percent calcium carbonate equivalent); slightly alkaline (pH 7.7).

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Collegiate, Saruche, Rombo, and Trujillo series. The Collegiate soils have an aquic moisture regime and are on flood plains. The Saruche and Rombo soils have a paralithic contact above 60 inches and are on hill slopes. The Trujillo soils average less than 35 percent clay in the control section and are on fans.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained, medium runoff, slow permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Rangeland, hay and pasture, wildlife habitat; the native vegetation is mainly western wheatgrass, Columbia needlegrass, fringed sagebrush, mountain muhly, and nodding brome.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: southern foothills, Colorado and New Mexico; LRR E, MLRA 49; moderate extent.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Las Animas county, Colorado, Las Animas County soil survey area, Colorado, 2007. The name was taken from a canyon in the area.

Remarks: Laboratory data #S93CO-071-006. This soil was previously classified as the Fughes series. Laboratory data identified mixed mineralogy instead of smectitic.
