BARKLEY SERIES

The Barkley series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in mixed sediments having a small amount of ash. Barkley soils are on terraces and have slopes of 0 to 30 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 15 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 43 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, frigid Duric Argixerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Barkley stony loam, rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A--0 to 7 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) stony loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure parting to weak fine granular; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and fine roots and common medium roots; common very fine and fine vesicular and tubular pores; 10 percent gravel and 5 percent stones; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (5 to 16 inches thick)

Bt--7 to 14 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) clay loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate fine angular blocky structure; hard, friable, sticky and slightly plastic; common very ifne and fine roots and few medium roots; common very fine and fine tubular pores; many distinct clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 5 percent gravel and 5 percent cobbles; neutral; clear smooth boundary (4 to 10 inches thick)

Btq--14 to 26 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) gravelly sandy clay loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable; common very fine and fine roots and few medium roots; common very fine and fine tubular pores; common faint clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 15 percent cobbles; slightly alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 15 inches thick)

Bt1--26 to 38 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) gravelly sandy loam, brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure parting to weak fine granular; slightly hard, very friable; few very fine and fine roots; common very fine and fine interstitial pores; 20 percent durinodes; 25 percent gravel and 5 percent cobbles; slightly alkaline; clear wavy boundary. (0 to 15 inches thick)

2Bq1--38 to 48 inches; pink (7.5YR 8/4) discontinuous weakly cemented very gravelly sandy loam; moderate medium platy structure; extremely hard, firm, brittle; few very fine and fine roots in pockets; 30 percent gravel and 5 percent cobbles; slightly alkaline; abrupt wavy boundary. (7 to 10 inches thick)

2Bkq--48 to 60 inches; pink (7.5YR 8/4) consolidated gravelly sandy loam; massive; 20 percent grave; slightly effervescent.

TYPE LOCATION: Owyhee County, Idaho; about 4.5 miles east of Three Creek; in the NE1/4 SE1/4 section 29, T.15 S., R.12 E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is 41 to 47 degrees F. The soils usually are moist but are dry in the moisture control section for 65 to 90 days within the four-month period following the summer solstice. Depth to the extremely hard, firm, and brittle layer is 20 to 40 inches. Depth to bedrock is greater than 60 inches. The mollic epipedon is 10 to 20 inches thick.

The A horizon has value of 2 or 3 moist, 4 or 5 dry and chroma of 2 or 3.

The Bt and Btq horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR value of 5 or 6 dry, 3 or 4 moist, and chroma of 2 through 4 dry. It is sandy clay loam or clay loam and averages 27 to 35 percent clay. It has 0 to 20 percent durinodes.

The 2Bq horizon is hard to extremely hard, firm or very firm and brittle. Hue is 7.5YR or 10YR. It is sandy loam or sandy clay loam and averages 5 to 45 percent gravel. It is neutral or slightly alkaline. It has 10 to 27 percent clay. Cementation is discontinuous.

The 2Bkq or 2C horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR. It is loam or sandy loam and has 20 to 35 percent gravel. It is none effervescent or slightly effervescent. It is neutral to moderately alkaline. It has 5 to 18 percent clay.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Barkley soils are on terraces. Elevations range from 4,200 to 4,400 feet in Oregon. In Idaho elevation is 4,900 to 6,200 feet. The soils formed in very deep sediment weathered from basalt, felsite, and a small amount of ash. The climate is characterized by cold wet winters and hot dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 13 to 18 inches. The mean annual temperature is 39 to 45 degrees F. The frost-free period is 50 to 90 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Blackleg, Booford, Paynecreek, Pixley and Threek soils. Blackleg soils have an indurated duripan with 40 inches of the soil surface. Booford soils are moderately deep to a paralithic contact. Raynecreek soils lack the discontinuous cementation. Pixley soils are shallow to a duripan. Threek soils are clayey-skeletal.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow runoff; very slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: The soils are used for range and irrigated crops. Native vegetation is mainly mountain big sagebrush, antelope bitterbrush, Idaho fescue, and bottlebrush squirreltail.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Basins in south-central Oregon and southwestern Idaho. The series is of small extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Portland, Oregon

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Klamath County, Oregon, 1977.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features in this pedon include:

Mollic epipedon - from the surface to 14 inches
Argillic horizon - from 7 to 26 inches
Duric feature - from 26 to 48 inches

The official series type location was moved in 2003 from Klamath County, Oregon to Owyhee County, Idaho. The pedon in Klamath County has a moderately cemented continuous duripan.
