TYPICAL PEDON: Barrymore silt loam--rangeland. On a 2 percent slope, south aspect, 3,860 feet elevation. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) When described on September 23, 1986, the soil was dry throughout.
A--0 to 5 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) silt loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; moderate medium platy structure; soft, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine irregular pores; neutral (pH 6.6); clear smooth boundary. (3 to 6 inches thick)
Bw--5 to 17 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) silt loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few fine and very fine roots; common very fine and few fine tubular pores; neutral (pH 7.1); clear smooth boundary. (8 to 17 inches thick)
Bk--17 to 25 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) silt loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; massive; hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; 5 percent gravel; strongly effervescent (25 percent calcium carbonate); moderately alkaline (pH 7.9); abrupt smooth boundary. (6 to 26 inches thick)
2R--25 inches; fractured basalt bedrock with lime coatings on surface and in fractures.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Bahem, Bram, Idahome, Nyssaton, Pogal and Portino series. All of these soils are over 40 inches deep. Portino soils have a calcic horizon at 6 to 15 inches.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Barrymore soils are on terraces. They formed in alluvium and loess from mixed sources. Slopes range from 1 to 4 percent. Elevation ranges from 3,500 to 4,250 feet. The average annual precipitation is 8 to 11 inches. The average annual temperature is 47 to 49 degrees F. The frost-free period is 130 to 140 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Idow, Paulville and Starbuck soils. Idow soils are moderately deep to a duripan and have fine-loamy control sections. Paulville soils are very deep and have fine-loamy control sections. Starbuck soils are shallow to bedrock. All soils are on the same landform as Barrymore soils.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained, slow runoff; moderate permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Barrymore soils are used for rangeland and irrigated cropland. Native vegetation is Wyoming big sagebrush and Thurber needlegrass. Irrigated crops are mainly wheat, barley, beans and alfalfa hay.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: This series is of moderate extent in south central Idaho.
