BAYWOOD SERIES

The Baywood series consists of deep, somewhat excessively drained soils that formed in old sand dunes near the coast. Baywood soils have slopes of 0 to 50 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 25 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 56 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Sandy, mixed, thermic Entic Haploxerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Baywood fine sand, abandoned field, annual grasses and weeds. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

Ap--0 to 5 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) fine sand, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; weak coarse granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine roots; many very fine interstitial pores; slightly acid (pH 6.1); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 7 inches thick)

A12--5 to 13 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) fine sand, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; massive; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine roots; many very fine interstitial pores; moderately acid (pH 6.0); gradual wavy boundary. (8 to 12 inches thick)

A13--13 to 36 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) fine sand, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; massive; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few fine and very fine roots; many very fine interstitial pores; moderately acid (pH 6.0); gradual wavy boundary. (12 to 25 inches thick)

C1--36 to 55 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) fine sand, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; indistinct blotches 2 to 5 inches across, more reddish in color (7.5YR 4/2 dry and 5YR 3/2 moist) make up 1/5 of horizon; massive; soft, very friable; few fine, very fine and medium roots; many very fine interstitial pores; moderately acid (pH 6.0); gradual wavy boundary. (18 to 24 inches thick)

C2--55 to 76 inches; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) fine sand, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; distinct irregular blotches of lighter color (10YR 5/3 dry and 4/3 moist) make up about 1/4 of horizon; massive; soft, very friable; few fine and very fine roots; many very fine interstitial pores; moderately acid (pH 5.9); gradual wavy boundary. (18 to 25 inches thick)

C3--76 to 90 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) fine sand, dark brown (10YR 4/3) moist; massive; slightly hard, very friable; many very fine interstitial pores; strongly acid (pH 5.5).

TYPE LOCATION: San Luis Obispo County, California; community of Baywood Park; 1/4 mile south of Los Osos Valley Road on Borderson Road, 1/10 mile south of Highland Drive, 50 feet east.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is 59 degrees to 62 degrees F. The soil between depths of about 12 to 36 inches is usually moist in some or all parts shortly after the first of November and stays moist until sometime in May, and is dry the rest of the year. The organic matter ranges from 1 to 4 percent to a depth of 10 inches and decreases regularly with depth. The soil is neutral to strongly acid. It is sand, fine sand, loamy sand or loamy fine sand throughout the profile, and is not stratified.

The A horizon is very dark gray, dark gray, gray, very dark grayish brown, dark grayish brown, dark brown and brown in 10YR hue and brown or dark brown in 7.5YR hue.

The C horizon is dark grayish brown, grayish brown, light brownish gray, light gray, pale brown, or very pale brown in 10YR hue and brown in 7.5YR hue. In some pedons there is a B horizon separating the A horizon and the C horizon. Some pedons also have a few faint lamellae or a few small dark reddish brown concretions. Other pedons rest on firm loamy terrace deposits at depths of 48 to 60 inches.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Arnold, Marina, Oceano and Tangair series. Arnold soils have less than 1 percent organic matter at depth of 10 inches. Marina and Oceano soils have distinct lamellae in the profile. Tangair soils have a Bir horizon of shot or iron concretions.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Baywood soils are on old sand dunes near the coast and have gradients of 0 to 50 percent. Elevations are 20 to 800 feet. The climate is subhumid mesothermal with cool foggy summers and cool moist winters. Mean annual precipitation is 15 to 35 inches. Average annual temperature is 57 degrees to 60 degrees F.; average January temperature is about 50 degrees F.; average July temperature is about 62 degrees F. The average frost-free season is about 250 to 350 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Marina, Oceano and Tangair soils and the Altamont and Los Osos soils. Altamont soils have more than 35 percent clay. Los Osos have an argillic horizon that is more than 35 percent clay.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat excessively drained; slow runoff; rapid permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used mostly for rangeland. Some cropped areas have been abandoned. Small areas used for growing truck crops with irrigation. Vegetation is California sagebrush, black sage, annual grasses and weeds, lupine, and eucalyptus trees.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Within a few miles of the coast from Sonoma to Santa Barbara Counties in California. The soils are of moderate extent.
