BEREME SERIES

The Bereme series consists of shallow, well drained soils that formed in residuum from sandstone. Bereme soils are on hills and canyons of islands. Slopes range from 15 to 75 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 26 inches (457 millimeters) and the mean annual temperature is about 63 degrees F. (17 degrees C.)

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy, mixed, superactive, thermic Lithic Argixerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Bereme sandy loam on a canyon side with 44 percent slope, under a cover of buckwheat and wild oats, at an elevation of 444 feet (135 meters). (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted; pH by phenol red).

A--0 to 1 inches, (0 to 3 cm); grayish brown (10YR 5/2) sandy loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; 8 percent clay; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; many very fine roots; many very fine interstitial pores; 0 percent; neutral, neutral (pH 7.2); abrupt smooth boundary. (1 to 3 inches thick, 2 to 7 centimeters)

Bt1--1 to 12 inches, (3 to 30 cm); brown (10YR 5/3) sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; 14 percent clay; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; many very fine roots; many very fine tubular pores; 10 percent very fine faint clay bodies on faces of peds; 0 percent; neutral, neutral (pH 7.2); clear smooth boundary. (6 to 15 inches thick, 15 to 38 centimeters)

Bt2--12 to 15 inches, (30 to 37 cm); brown (10YR 5/3) sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; 14 percent clay; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; many very fine roots; many very fine interstitial pores; 10 percent fine faint clay bodies on faces of peds; 0 percent; neutral, neutral (pH 7.2) ; abrupt smooth boundary. (2 to 8 inches thick, 5 to 20 centimeters)

R--15 to 16 inches, (37 to 40 cm); very strongly cemented sandstone bedrock.

TYPE LOCATION: Santa Rosa Island, Santa Barbara County, California, in the Channel Islands Soil Survey Area on the west side of Canada Lobos canyon about 1/2 mile north of road 34 degrees North latitude, 0 minutes, 20 seconds and 120 degrees, 5 minutes, 27 seconds West longitude, NAD83. - U.S.G.S Quad: Santa Rosa Island.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:

Depth to bedrock is 7 to 20 inches (18 to 50 centimeters) but is best represented by 10 to 20 inches (25 to 50 centimeters).

The mean annual soil temperature is 59 to 64 degrees F. (15 to 18 degrees C.)
The soil moisture control section is dry in all parts from about mid-August to mid-November (about 90 days) and is usually moist the rest of the time.

The particle size control section averages 12 to 18 percent clay, and 0 to 25 percent rock fragments.
Organic matter ranges from 2 to 3 percent to a depth of at least 7 inches (18 centimeters).
Reaction is slightly acid to neutral.

The A horizon dry color is 10YR 5/2, 10YR 3/2 moist.

The Bt horizon dry color is 10YR 5/2 and 5/3. Moist color is 10YR 3/3 and 3/2.
Textures are sandy loam or gravelly sandy loam.
Clay content is 12 to 18 percent.
Coarse fragments are 0 to 25 percent gravels.

COMPETING SERIES: This is the Topdeck series. Topdeck soils average 18 to 35 percent clay in the particle size control section.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Bereme soils are on side slopes of hills and canyons on islands. Slopes range from 30 to 75 percent. The soils formed in residuum from sandstone. Elevations are 600 to 1500 feet (183 to 457 meters). The climate is characterized by warm, dry summers and cool, moist winters with a potential for fog common all year. The mean annual precipitation is 21 to 31 inches (533 to 787 mm), the mean annual temperature is 61 to 66 degrees F. (16 to 19 degrees C.), and the frost free season is 355 to 365 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: This is the Ironshot series. Ironshot soils are greater than 20 inches to bedrock and lack argillic horizons..

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; high runoff; moderate to moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Wildlife habitat, recreation and building site development. Vegetation is low shrubs and annual grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Santa Barbara County, California on Santa Rosa Island. The soil is not extensive. MLRA 20.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Davis, California.

SERIES PROPOSED: Santa Barbara County, California, 2005.

REMARKS: The series name is coined. NASIS Pedon ID is CA04688SRJS13. Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon:

Mollic epipedon--The zone from the soil surface to a depth of about 1 inch to a depth of about 15 inches .

Argillic horizon--The zone from a depth of 1 inch to a depth of about 15 inches.
