BLUEMOUND SERIES

The Bluemound series consists of shallow, well drained, moderately permeable soils formed in 10 to 20 inches of loess overlying Sioux quartzite bedrock. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 48 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is about 26 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Lithic Haplustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Bluemound silt loam on a 1 percent slope in pasture. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

A--0 to 14 inches; black (10YR 2/1) silt loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) dry; moderate very fine granular structure; friable; neutral; abrupt smooth boundary.

2R--14 inches; red, pale red, and weak red Sioux quartzite.

TYPE LOCATION: Rock County, Minnesota; about 4 miles southeast of Ihlen; 100 feet south and 100 feet east of northwest corner of sec. 15, T. 104 N., R. 46 W.; USGS Jasper SE, Minnesota Quadrangle, Latitude 43 degrees 49 minutes 10 seconds N., Longitude 96 degrees 21 minutes 03 seconds W., NAD27.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The depth to bedrock ranges from 10 to 20 inches. The thickness of the mollic ranges from 10 to 20 inches.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 2 or 3 moist, 2 to 4 dry, and chroma of 1 or 2, moist or dry. It typically is silt loam but includes silty clay loam. Reaction is slightly acid or neutral.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils are on concave to convex areas underlain by quartzite bedrock. The Bluemound soils formed in 10 to 20 inches of loess that overlies Sioux quartzite bedrock on uplands. Mean annual temperature is about 46 to 50 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is about 22 to 30 inches. Frost free days range from 150 to 180 days. Elevation ranges from 1150 to 1800 feet above sea level.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are Ihlen, Moody and Trent. Ihlen soils are deeper to bedrock, Moody and Trent soils do not have bedrock above 80 inches.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Surface runoff is low to medium. Permeability is moderate.

USE AND VEGETATION: The major acreage of the soil is used for pasture. Native vegetation is tall and mid grass prairie.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southwestern Minnesota. Inextensive.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: St. Paul, Minnesota

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Rock County, Minnesota, 2002.

REMARKS: Bluemound seris was previously mapped as Ihlen Variant. Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are: mollic epipedon - the zone from 0 to 14 inches (A horizon); ustic moisture regime.
