BOARDCAMP SERIES
The Boardcamp series consists of very deep, well drained soils formed in residuum and colluvium derived from sandstone and mudstone. These soils are on mountains and have slopes of 30 to 50 percent. Mean annual precipitation is 2540 millimeters (100 inches) and the mean annual temperature is 7 degrees C (44 degrees F).
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, active, frigid Typic Humixerepts
TYPICAL PEDON: Boardcamp very gravelly loam - under a stand of white fir, grand fir, Douglas-fir, and snowberry. When described on September 1, 2004, the soil was dry throughout. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated).
Oi--0 to 3 centimeters (0 to 1 inches); slightly decomposed plant material consisting of needles and leaves of Douglas fir and tanoak; moderately acid (pH 6.0). (0 to 15 centimeters thick)
A1--3 to 13 centimeters (1 to 5 inches); brown (10YR 4/3) very gravelly loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky parting to moderate very fine granular structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine through medium roots throughout; many very fine, and common fine and medium tubular pores; 50 percent gravel; strongly acid (pH 5.4); abrupt smooth boundary.
A2--13 to 43 centimeters (5 to 17 inches); yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) very gravelly loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine through medium roots throughout; many fine and common medium tubular pores; 50 percent gravel; very strongly acid (pH 5.0); clear wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of A horizons is 25 to 50 centimeters thick)
Bw1--43 to 80 centimeters (17 to 32 inches); light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) gravelly loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine through medium, and common coarse roots throughout; many fine, and common medium and coarse tubular pores; 30 percent gravel; very strongly acid (pH 5.0); clear wavy boundary.
Bw2--80 to 120 centimeters (32 to 47 inches); light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) gravelly loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine through medium, and common coarse and very coarse roots throughout; many fine, common medium and coarse tubular pores; 20 percent gravel; very strongly acid (pH 5.0); clear wavy boundary.
Bw3--120 to 200 centimeters (47 to 79 inches); yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) gravelly loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common medium, coarse and very coarse roots throughout; common coarse interstitial pores; 20 percent gravel; very strongly acid (pH 5.0). (Combined thickness of Bw horizons is 100 to 150 centimeters thick)

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in this family.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils occur on mountain slopes. They have slopes of 30 to 50 percent. Elevations are 1090 to 1486 meters (3576 to 4875 feet). These soils formed in colluvium and residuum derived from sandstone and mudstone. The climate is subhumid with warm dry summers and cold moist winters. The mean annual precipitation is 2032 to 2794 millimeters (80 to 110 inches). Mean January temperature is about 3 degrees C (37 degrees F); mean July temperature is about 15 degrees C (59 degrees F); and the mean annual temperature is 5 to 8 degrees C (41 to 47 degrees F).The frost free period is about 75 to 150 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Smokehouse and
Triboard soils. The Smokehouse soils have greater than 35 percent coarse fragments in the particle size control section and are on convex positions. Triboard soils are moderately well drained and are in concave positions.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well-drained; high runoff; moderately high saturated hydraulic conductivity.
USE AND VEGETATION: Used for timber production, wildlife habitat and watershed. Native vegetation is white fir, grand fir, incense cedar and Douglas-fir with an understory of snowberry, whitethorn ceanothus and bracken fern.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Siskiyou-Trinity Area, MLRA 5. These soils are of small extent.
