BOCOX SERIES


The Bocox series consists of very deep, poorly drained, moderately permeable soils. These level to very gently sloping soils formed in loamy alluvium or eolian sediments of Pleistocene age. These soils occur on depressional areas on alluvial plains of the Central Rolling Red Prairies (MLRA 80A). Slope ranges from 0 to 3 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 16.1 degrees C (61 degrees F), and mean annual precipitation is about 838 mm (33 in).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy, mixed, active, thermic Aquic Arenic Hapludalfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Bocox loamy fine sand, in rangeland, at an elevation of 352 m (1155 ft). (Colors are for dry soil unless other stated.)

A--0 to 28 cm (0 to 11 in); yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) loamy fine sand, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; moderate medium granular structure; soft, very friable; common very fine and few fine and medium roots; few fine pores; few medium distinct very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) redox depletions with clear boundaries in matrix; common brown (7.5YR 5/4) rhizospheres; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (Thickness of the A horizon is 10 to 30 cm [4 to 12 in])

E1--28 to 51 cm (11 to 20 in); light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) loamy fine sand, yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) moist; weak medium granular structure; soft, very friable; common very fine and few fine and medium roots; few fine pores; common strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) rhizospheres; slightly_ effervescent; slightly alkaline; water table at 41 cm (16 in); gradual smooth boundary.

E2--51 to 84 cm (20 to 33 in); yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) loamy fine sand, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) moist; weak medium granular structure; soft, very friable; common very fine and few fine and medium roots; few fine pores; slightly_ effervescent; slightly alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the E horizon is 13 to 107 cm [5 to 42 in])

Btl--84 to 132 cm (33 to 52 in); reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/6) sandy clay loam strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, very firm; few very fine roots, few fine pores; common medium and coarse distinct strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) moist, masses of oxidized iron with clear boundaries in matrix; common medium and coarse distinct brown (7.5YR 4/2) moist, masses of oxidized iron with clear boundaries in matrix; few medium prominent very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist, iron depletions with prominent boundaries in matrix; few fine black concretions; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (Thickness of the Bt1 is 15 to 86 cm [6 to 34 in])

Bt2--132 to 165 cm (52 to 65 in); variegated with reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/6), pink (7.5YR 7/3), pinkish gray (5YR 7/2), and white (5YR 8/1), fine sandy loam; strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) moist, light brown (7.5YR 6/3) moist, pinkish gray (5YR 6/2) moist, light gray (5YR 7/1) moist; the gray colors are masses of iron depletions; moderate medium subangular blocky; hard, firm; few very fine roots; few fine pores; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bt horizon is 25 to 137 cm [10 to 54 in])

Bt3--165 to 203 cm (65 to 80 in); variegated with reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/6), pink (7.5YR 7/3), pinkish gray (5YR 7/2), and white (5YR 8/1), fine sandy loam; strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) moist, light brown (7.5YR 6/3) moist, pinkish gray (5YR 6/2) moist, light gray (5YR 7/1) moist; the gray colors are masses of iron depletions; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm; few very fine roots; few fine pores; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These soils are Bathel, Derby, Dougherty, Konawa and Navina Series.
Bathel soils: have sandy surface textures less than 50 cm (20 in) thick
Derby, Dougherty, Konawa and Navina soils: do not have wetness features within 75 cm (30 in) of the soil surface
Derby soils: are on dunes
Dougherty and Konawa soils: are on slightly higher areas
Navina soils: have a mollic epipedon and are on slightly higher areas

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY:
Drainage: poorly
Permeability: moderate
Runoff: negligible
Seasonal water table: +30 to 46 cm (+1.0 to 1.5 ft) from October to June
Ponding: frequently ponded to a depth of 30 cm (12 in) for long durations, and exhibits redox features associated with episaturation

USE AND VEGETATION: The principle use is for rangeland. The main native species are sand bluestem, little bluestem, and switchgrass. Common introduced species are bermudagrass and weeping lovegrass. Common invaders are smartweed, sedges, and cattails.
