BODORUMPE SERIES

Typically, Bodorumpe soils have pale brown loose neutral fine sand Al horizons; pale brown and grayish brown mildly alkaline noncalcareous loamy sand and fine sand C horizons over bedded soft calcareous platy shale at a depth of 36 inches .

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Mixed, frigid Typic Torripsamments

TYPICAL PEDON: Bodorumpe fine sand - rangeland
(Colors are for air dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A1--0 to 3 inches; Pale brown (10YR 6/3) fine sand, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; single grained; loose, nonsticky, nonplastic; neutral (pH 7.2); gradual wavy boundary.

C1--3 to 25 inches; Pale brown (10YR 6/3) loamy fine sand, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; single grained; loose, nonsticky, nonplastic; mildly alkaline (ph 7.4); clear smooth boundary.

C2--25 to 36 inches; Grayish brown (10YR 5/2) fine sand, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; single grained; loose, nonsticky, nonplastic; mildly alkaline (pH 7.6); gradual wavy boundary.

IIC3--36 to 40 inches; Soft, calcareous, platy shale.

TYPE LOCATION: Sublette County, Wyoming; NE1/4, NE1/4, Sec. 2, T30N, RlO9W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is 36 degrees to 47 degrees F. The mean summer soil temperature is 59 degrees to 62 degrees F. Depth to soft bedded shale is 20 to 40 inches. The soils commonly are noncalcareous. Weak accumulation of calcium carbonates are found in a few pedons immediately above or within the upper part of the bedded shale. The control section is loamy fine sand or fine sand. It is neutral or mildly alkaline. The A1 horizon has hue of 2.5Y or 10YR; value of 5 or 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist; and chroma of 2 or 3 dry and moist. It is loamy fine sand or fine sand. It is neutral or mildly alkaline. The C horizons have hue of 2.5Y or 10YR.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the tentative Corlett, tentative Costilla, tentative Cotopaxi, and tentative Space City series. The Corlett soils are calcareous, have a high percentage of dark magnetic minerals and lack bedrock above 40 inches. The Costilla and Space City soils have continuous horizon of secondary calcium carbonate and lack bedrock above 40 inches. Cotopaxi soils lack bedrock above 40 inches.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Bodorumpe soils are in windfall areas on rolling uplands. Slopes are 3 to 15 percent. They formed in wind-deposited, noncalcareous sands. Mean annual temperature is 34 degrees to 45 degrees F. Precipitation is 6 to 9 inches. Elevation is 6,000 to 7,000 feet. The growing season is 83 to 110 days, but frost may occur in any month.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the tentative Littsan soils. Littsan soils are coarse-loamy and have argillic horizons.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow runoff; rapid permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used for rangeland and wildlife habitat. Vegetation is needleleaf sedge, needleandthread, rubber rabbitbrush, and thickspike wheatgrass.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southwestern Wyoming. The series is inextensive.
