TYPE LOCATION: Kings County, California, about 3 1/2 miles southwest of Lemoore, approximately 435 feet east of 20th Avenue and 990 feet south of Jackson Avenue in section 28, T.19 S., R.20 E., MDB&M.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The soil is 60 inches or more deep. The moisture control section is moist all year in most years and is saturated from December to March in some years. The mean annual soil temperature is 61 degrees to 63 degrees F. Organic matter is 0.1 to 0.6 percent in the surface layer and decreases irregularly with increasing depth. Most soil horizons have 2 to 8.4 percent soluble salt. The soil is commonly effervescent throughout. Some pedons are noneffervescent to a depth of 6 inches.
The A horizon has dry color of 2.5Y 5/2, 6/2, 7.2; 5Y 5/1, 5/2 or 6/2 and moist color of 2.5Y 3/2, 4/2; 5Y 4/1 or 4/2. It is commonly sandy loam, fine sandy loam or less commonly coarse sandy loam. This horizon is slightly alkaline to very strongly alkaline.
The C horizon has dry color of 2.5Y 6/2, 7/2; or 5Y 6/2 and moist color of 2.5Y 4/2, 5/2; or 5Y 5/3. Moist mottles are faint to prominent and have color of 10YR 4/6; 2.5Y 5/4; 5Y 4/2; N 5/0; or 5B 6/1. This horizon is sandy loam, fine sandy loam or less commonly coarse sandy loam. Buried horizons are thin and range from sand to clay loam. Some pedons lack buried horizons. Durinodes range from 0 to 10 percent in lower part of the C horizon. This horizon is moderately alkaline to very strongly alkaline.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Land, Levis, and Stutzville series in other families. Land soils are moderately well drained and have a fine-silty particle-size control section. Levis soils have a fine particle-size control section. Stutzville soils have a fine-loamy particle-size control section.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Boggs soils are on alluvial plains. Slopes are 0 to 1 percent. The soils formed in alluvium from igneous and sedimentary rocks. Elevations are 190 to 250 feet. The climate is arid with hot dry summers and cool moist winters. The average annual precipitation is 7 or 8 inches. Mean January temperature is 45 degrees F.; mean July temperature is 82 degrees F.; mean annual temperature is 64 degrees F. Frost-free season is 250 to 275 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Foster, Grangeville, and Tulare soils. Foster and Grangeville soils have a mollic epipedon. Tulare soils have a fine particle-size control section.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat poorly drained; very slow runoff; moderate permeability. A perched water table is at a depth of 36 to 48 inches year-round. The soil remains moist below 6 inches from April through November.
USE AND VEGETATION: Used primarily for irrigated crops such as barley and cotton. The natural vegetation is iodine bush (Allenrolfea occidentalis), saltgrass, and few annual grasses.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: San Joaquin Valley. Series is of small extent.
