BONDFARM SERIES

The Bondfarm series consists of shallow, well drained soils that formed in eolian material over basalt. These soils are on basalt plains and have slopes of 2 to 12 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 9 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy, mixed, superactive, frigid Lithic Xeric Haplocalcids

TYPICAL PEDON: Bondfarm sandy loam, rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A--0 to 4 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) sandy loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; weak very thin platy structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine, fine and medium roots; many very fine irregular pores; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4); clear wavy boundary. (3 to 6 inches thick)

Bk1--4 to 13 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) sandy loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine roots; common very fine and fine tubular pores; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4); gradual wavy boundary. (2 to 10 inches thick)

Bk2--13 to 18 inches; very pale brown (10YR 7/3) sandy loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; massive; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4); abrupt wavy boundary. (4 to 15 inches thick)

2R--18 inches; basalt bedrock with about 3/8 inch lime accumulation on surface and in cracks and pores.

TYPE LOCATION: Jefferson County, Idaho; about 3 miles north and 3 miles east of Monteview; 50 feet south, 835 feet east of the NW corner sec. 21, T.8N., R.34E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is 41 to 45 degrees F., and the mean summer soil temperature at the lithic contact is 63 to 66 degrees F. The soils are usually dry but are moist in some part between a depth of 8 inches and bedrock for 60 to 80 days in the spring. Basalt bedrock is at depths of 10 to 20 inches. The particle-size control section averages 10 to 18 percent clay.

The A horizon has value of 5 through 7 dry, 3 through 5 moist and chroma of 2 or 3. This horizon is slightly or strongly effervescent.

COMPETING SERIES: This is the Deuce series. Deuce soils have 18 to 32 percent clay in the particle-size section.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The soils are on basalt plains at elevations of 4,600 to 5,200 feet. Slopes range from 2 to 12 percent. The soils formed in eolian material over basalt. The climate is semiarid and has dry summers. Mean annual precipitation is 8 to 11 inches, including 1 to 3 feet of snowfall. Average frost-free period is 80 to 100 days.

ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Aecet, Bereniceton, Malm, Matheson and Modkin soils and the competing Bondranch soils. Aecet, Bereniceton, Malm, Matheson and Modkin soils do not have bedrock at depths of less than 20 inches.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; moderately rapid permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used for livestock grazing. The principal plants are big sagebrush, three-tip sagebrush, small rabbitbrush, bluebunch wheatgrass, needleandthread and Indian ricegrass.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: The series is of small extent in southeastern Idaho.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Portland, Oregon

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Jefferson County, Idaho, 1975.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:

Ochric epipedon - the zone form the soil surface to 4 inches (A horizon).

Calcic horizon - the zone from 4 to 18 inches (Bk1 and Bk2 horizons).

Lithic contact - bedrock at 18 inches (2R horizon).

Particle-size control section - the zone form 10 to 18 inches (part of the Bk1 horizon and the Bk2 horizon).
