BOSQUE SERIES

The Bosque series consists of very deep to loamy alluvium, well drained soils that formed in loamy, calcareous alluvium of Pleistocene age derived from limestone and shale. These nearly level soils are on treads of flood plains. Slopes range from 0 to 1 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 786 mm (30.95 in) and the mean annual air temperature is about 17.7 degrees C (63.8 degrees F).

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:

Solum depth: greater than 152 cm (60 in)
Soil Moisture: An ustic soil moisture regime that borders on udic. The soil moisture control section is dry in some or all parts for 90 or more cumulative days and moist, in some part, either for more than 180 cumulative days per year, or for 90 or more consecutive days in normal years.
Soil Temperature: 18.9 to 22.2 degrees C (66 to 72 degrees F)
Thickness of the mollic epipedon: 51 to 152 cm (20 to 60 in)
Thickness of the cambic horizon: 0 to 152 cm (0 to 60 in)

Particle-size control section:
Clay content: 20 to 35 percent
Rock fragments: amount-0 to 10 percent; kind-quartzite or limestone; shape-nonflat; size-gravels
Calcium carbonate equivalent: 15 to 30 percent
Identifiable secondary carbonates: amount-0 to 5 percent; kind-carbonate masses; shape-threadlike, size-fine or medium
Reaction: Reaction is slightly alkaline or moderately alkaline and calcareous
Other features: Some pedons have thin, discontinuous fine sandy loam or silt loam strata

A horizon
Hue: 7.5YR or 10YR
Value: 3 to 5
Chroma: 1 or 3 the mollic epipedon ranges from 51 to about 152 cm (20 to about 60 in) thick.
Texture: loam, clay loam, or sandy clay loam.

Bw horizon (absent in some pedons)
Hue: 7.5YR or 10YR
Value: 4 to 6
Chroma: 2 to 4, with or without brownish streaks or mottles.
Texture: is loam, sandy clay loam, or clay loam.

Akb, Ab, or Bwb horizon (where present)
Hue: 7.5YR or 10YR
Value: 3 to 5
Chroma: 1 or 3
Texture: clay or clay loam, but ranges to sandy clay loam. These horizons are typically below the 10- to 40- inch control section and are absent in some pedons.
Identifiable secondary carbonates: amount-2 to 20 percent; kind-carbonate masses; shape-threadlike, size-fine or medium

Gowen, Stanford, and Whitesboro soils are noncalcareous.
Bergstrom soils: have fine-silty control sections.
Frio soils: have fine textured control sections.
Oakalla soils: have carbonatic mineralogy.
Venus soils: have mollic epipedons less than 51 cm (20 in) thick and are on uplands.
