BOYETT SERIES

The Boyett series consists of deep, well drained soils that formed in arkosic sandstone and old alluvium weathered from red sedimentary rock. Permeability is moderate to moderately rapid. Boyett soils are on upland hills and ridges. Slopes range from 2 to 40 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 430 mm and the mean annual temperature is about 7 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, frigid Typic Haplustalfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Boyett sandy loam-forest. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

Oi--0 to 3 cm; needles, leaves, and twigs.

A--3 to 16 cm; brown (7.5YR 5/2) sandy loam; dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable; 5 percent gravel; few fine and medium roots, few fine interstitial pores; slightly acid (pH 6.2); clear smooth boundary. (8 to 15 cm thick)

E--16 to 26 cm; pink (7.5YR 7/4) gravelly coarse sandy loam, brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; weak medium and fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable; 15 percent gravel; few fine and medium roots; common fine tubular pores; slightly acid (pH 6.4); abrupt wavy boundary. (8 to 20 cm thick)

Bt1--26 to 44 cm; reddish brown (5YR 5/4) gravelly sandy loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/4) moist; moderate medium angular blocky structure; very hard, very firm, slightly sticky, and slightly plastic; 20 percent gravel; few very fine roots; slightly acid (pH 6.2); abrupt smooth boundary.

Bt2--44 to 90 cm; reddish brown (5YR 5/4) gravelly sandy loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/3) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, very firm, sticky, and plastic; 30 percent gravel; few very fine roots; slightly acid (pH 6.3); abrupt smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bt1 and Bt2 horizons - 50 to 85 cm)

Btk--90 to 110 cm; reddish brown (5YR 5/4) gravelly sandy loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/3) moist; weak medium prismatic structure parting to weak medium subangular blocky; very hard, firm, sticky; 15 percent lime coated gravel; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4); gradual smooth boundary. (15 to 30 cm thick)

Ck--110 to 138 cm; light reddish brown (5YR 6/4) sandy loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/4) moist; massive; hard, friable, sticky; 5 percent lime coated gravel; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4).

R--138 cm; arkosic sandstone.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Holdingford (MN) and Rockwood (MN) series. The Holdingford and Rockwood soils lack an arkosic influence in the Bt horizon and are more friable.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Landform--alluvial terraces, hills and ridges
Elevation--2075 to 2450 meters
Slope--2 to 40 percent
Parent material--locally transported from sedimentary arkosic beds of the Fountain and Lyons Formations or in red aeolian material over sandstone
Mean annual precipitation--380 to 510 mm
Mean annual air temperature--6 to 7 degrees C
Mean summer air temperature--14 to 18 degrees C

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: None listed.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium to slow runoff; moderate to moderately rapid permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for forestry, pastureland, recreation, and watershed. Native vegetation is mainly ponderosa pine, oak brush, and an understory of grasses.
