BUCKNEY SERIES
The Buckney series consists of somewhat excessively drained, moderately rapidly permeable soils formed in sandy and loamy alluvium on slightly raised areas on bottom lands. Slope gradients are 0 to 6 percent range Mean annual temperature is about 51 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is about 31 inches.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Sandy, mixed, mesic Typic Hapludolls
TYPICAL PEDON: Buckney fine sandy loam on a bottom land with a slope of about 1 percent - cultivated. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)
Ap--0 to 7 inches; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) fine sandy loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) dry; weak fine granular structure; friable; neutral; clear smooth boundary.
A1--7 to 14 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) fine sandy loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) dry; weak fine subangular blocky structure parting to weak fine granular; friable; neutral; clear smooth boundary.
A2--14 to 22 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) fine sandy loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) and light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) dry; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; slight effervescence; mildly alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the A horizons is 14 to 24 inches.)
C1--22 to 36 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) loamy fine sand; single grain; loose; slight effervescence; mildly alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (0 to 30 inches thick)
C2--36 to 60 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) loamy fine sand; single grain; loose; few thin strata of light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) silt loam; strong effervescence; moderately alkaline.
TYPE LOCATION: Mills County, Iowa; about 1/2 mile north of Pacific Junction; 800 feet south and 2,400 feet east of the northwest corner, sec. 21, T. 72 N., R. 43 W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The thickness of solum and depth to carbonates range from 14 to 24 inches. Buckney soils typically are free of coarse fragments to a depth of 60 inches or more. Some pedons have 8 to 18 inches of silty overwash.
The Ap or A horizon has hue of 10YR and value and chroma of 2 or 3. It typically is fine sandy loam or loamy very fine sand. Reaction ranges from neutral to mildly alkaline. An AC horizon is in some pedons.
The C horizon has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 4 through 6, and chroma of 2 through 6. It typically is loamy fine sand, loamy very fine sand, or loamy sand but commonly contains thin strata of silt loam or loam. Reaction is mildly alkaline or moderately alkaline.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the
Burkhardt,
Dickman, and
Estherville soils in the same family and the
Landes soils. Burkhardt soils contain 8 to 40 percent gravel in the 2C horizons and are deeper to carbonates. Dickman soils have a thicker solum and are deeper to carbonates. Estherville soils contain 10 to 35 percent gravel in the 2C horizon. Landes soils have a thicker solum and are coarse-loamy.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Buckney soils are on the slightly raised areas of the nearly level bottoms along major river valleys. Slope gradients range from 0 to 6 percent but are commonly 0 to 2 percent. The soils formed in thick sandy and loamy alluvium. Mean annual temperature is about 49 to 53 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is about 28 to 32 inches.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include the
Blencoe,
Cooper,
Hanlon,
Keg,
Salix, and
Spillville soils. Blencoe, Cooper, Keg, and Salix soils have finer textures and are on slightly lower elevations on bottom lands. Hanlon and Spillville soils have thicker mollic epipedons and are on lower-lying first bottom lands.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Buckney soils are somewhat excessively drained. Runoff is slow. Permeability is moderately rapid.
USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are cropped to corn, soybeans, small grains, or hay. Some areas are in pasture. Native vegetation was prairie grasses.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Along the Missouri River in Iowa and other streams in central and western Iowa. The series is of small extent.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are: mollic epipedon - the zone from the surface of the soil to a depth of 14 inches (Ap and A1 horizon) udic moisture regime. 1/28/2011-TYPE LOCATION error was corrected.
