CANELO SERIES

The Canelo series consists of very deep, somewhat poorly drained, very slowly permeable soils that formed in old gravelly alluvium from andesite, rhyolite and quartzite rocks. Canelo soils are on old alluvial fans. Slopes range from 0 to 8 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 18 inches, and mean annual temperature is about 55 degrees F.

(5 to 10 inches thick)

Btg1--14 to 23 inches; mottled pinkish white (7.5YR 8/2), reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/6) and yellowish red (5YR 5/8) very gravelly heavy sandy clay loam, light brown (7.5YR 6/4), strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) and yellowish red (5YR 5/8) moist, mottles are many medium and large and distinct; few fine distinct light gray (10YR 7/1) mottles; moderate medium large and distinct; few fine distinct light gray (10YR 7/1) mottles; moderate medium subangular and angular blocky structure; hard, friable; sticky, plastic; common fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; common thin clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 60 percent gravel and 10 percent cobbles; moderately acid (pH 5.8); clear wavy boundary. (6 to 10 inches thick)

Btg2--23 to 34 inches; very pale brown (10YR 8/2) very gravelly clay, light gray (10YR 7/2) and very pale brown (10YR 7/4) moist; many medium distinct red (10R 4/6) mottles, red (10R 4/6) moist; moderate medium subangular and angular blocky structure; very hard, firm, sticky, plastic; few fine roots; few thin clay films on faces of peds; 60 percent gravel and 10 percent cobbles; extremely acid (pH 4.4); clear wavy boundary. (2 to 12 inches thick)

Bt--34 to 60 inches; light red (2.5YR 6/6) and red (2.5YR 4/6) very cobbly sandy clay, red (2.5YR 4/6) moist; common fine distinct pinkish gray (7.5YR 7/2) mottles, brown (7.5YR 5/4) moist; moderate medium and fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, friable, sticky, plastic; few fine tubular pores; common moderately thick clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 30 percent gravel and 35 percent cobble; extremely acid (pH 4.3). (17 to 35 inches thick)

TYPE LOCATION: Santa Cruz County, Arizona; approximately 2,000 feet east of W1/4 corner and .8 mile east-southeast of Canelo Pass cattle guard, sec. 30, T.22S., R.18E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Clay content: averages more than 35 percent clay

Coarse fragment content: is more than 35 percent by volume

Calcium carbonate: Noncalcareous throughout

Reaction: slightly to extremely acid.

Coarse fragment content: variable but averages 35 to 80 percent by volume.

Mean annual soil temperature ranges from 55 degrees to 59 degrees F.

Soil moisture: Aridic ustic moisture regime based on precipitation

These soils have characteristics associated with wetness (mottles with chroma of 1 and 2 in the upper B horizon). The A3 horizon is absent in some pedons.

A1 horizon
Hue: 10YR or 7.5YR
Value: 4 through 6 dry and 3 or 4 moist
Chroma: 7.5YR
Value: 5 through 7 dry and 4 through 6 moist
Chroma: 2 through 4.

A3 or B1 horizon
Hue: 10YR through 5YR
Value: 5 through 8 dry and 4 through 6 moist
Chroma: 2 through 4
It contains mottles with value of 6 through 8 dry and 5 through 7 moist and chroma of 1 through 8.
Texture: very gravelly sandy loam and gravelly sandy loam.

B2t and B3t horizons
Hue: 10YR through 5YR
Value: 5 through 8 dry and 4 through 6 moist
Chroma: 2 through 4. They have with value of 3 through 8 dry and moist. Some of the mottles are gray and have chroma of 1 or 2; others appear to be weathered gravel and have chroma of 6 through 8.

B2tg horizons
Texture: very gravelly sandy clay loam, very gravelly clay loam and very gravelly clay.
Structure: weak to moderate fine to coarse subangular and angular blocky structure.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Canelo soils are on nearly level to steep old alluvial fans at elevations of 5,000 to 6,000 feet. These soils formed in old gravelly alluvium from andesite, rhyolite and quartzite rocks. They occur in a continental climate, with an annual precipitation of 16 to 20 inches. The mean annual temperature ranges from 53 degrees to 57 degrees F. The frost-free season ranges from 140 to 200 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: In addition to the competing Casto soils, these are the Faraway, Luzena, Martinez and White House soils. Faraway and Luzena soils have mollic epipedons and have bedrock within 20 inches. Martinez and White House soils have less than 35 percent coarse fragments in the series control section, and White House soils have mean annual soil temperature of 59 degrees F. or more.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat poorly drained; medium to slow runoff; very slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used mainly for range and wildlife. Native vegetation is oak, manzanita, juniper, mesquite, blue, hairy and sideoats grama, plains lovegrass, three-awn, canebeardgrass and wolftail.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Santa Cruz and Cochise Counties, Arizona. These soils are moderately extensive. MLRA 41.
