CARRCREEK SERIES

The Carrcreek series consists of very deep, well drained soils formed in alluvium weathered from mixed rocks. These soils are on stream terraces and alluvial fans. Slope is 0 to 5 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 35 inches. Mean annual temperature is about 54 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, active, mesic Pachic Argixerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Carrcreek gravelly loam--on a southwest facing slope of 1 percent under cultivated pasture grasses at an elevation of 2,560 feet. (Colors are for dry soil unless stated otherwise. When described August 19, 1981, the soil was dry above 27 inches, and very slightly moist below that depth).

Ap--0 to 8 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) gravelly loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; strong medium and fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine, many very fine roots; many fine and very fine tubular pores; 20 percent gravel; slightly acid (pH 6.5); gradual wavy boundary. (6 to 9 inches thick).

A--8 to 12 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) gravelly loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine and very fine roots; few fine, many very fine tubular pores; 25 percent gravel, 5 percent cobbles; neutral (pH 7.0); gradual wavy boundary. (4 to 8 inches thick).

Bt1--12 to 29 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) very gravelly clay loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm, sticky and plastic; few fine, common very fine roots; few fine, common very fine tubular pores; common thin clay films lining pores and on faces of peds; 40 percent gravel; slightly alkaline (pH 7.5); gradual wavy boundary. (10 to 27 inches thick).

Bt2--29 to 50 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) very gravelly clay loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) moist; moderate fine and very fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm, very sticky and very plastic; few fine and very fine roots; few fine and very fine tubular pores; many thin clay films lining pores and on faces of peds; 45 percent gravel; slightly alkaline (pH 7.5); clear wavy boundary. (12 to 31 inches thick).

2Bt3--50 to 60 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) very gravelly sandy clay loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm, very sticky and plastic; few very fine roots; few fine and very fine tubular pores; many moderately thick clay films lining pores and on ped faces; 55 percent gravel; slightly alkaline (pH 7.5).

TYPE LOCATION: Trinity County, California; 6 miles northeast of Hayfork, California; 300 feet north of Carr Creek; 0.1 mile west of Carr Creek Road on Highway 3, south through Morris' ranchyard, 0.3 mile west of ranch house, 150 feet north of dirt road; 2,100 feet east, 2,000 feet north of the southwest corner of section 35, T.32N., R.llW. Hayfork Summit Quadrangle.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mollic epipedon is 20 to 35 inches thick. The particle-size control section averages 25 to 35 percent clay and 35 to 55 percent gravel. The mean annual soil temperature is 52 to 59 degrees F. The soil moisture control section is dry in all parts from mid July to mid October (75 to 100 days), The soil temperature at a depth of 20 inches exceeds 41 degrees F. from mid March to late December (280 to 300 days), and exceeds 47 degrees F from mid April to late November.

The A horizon is 10YR 4/2, 5/2, or 5/3. Moist color is 10YR 3/3, 3/2, or 2/1. The A horizon has 20 to 25 percent clay and 15 to 35 percent gravel.

The Bt horizon is 5/3 in the upper part and 10YR 4/4, 3/4, 5/4, or 5/6 in the lower part. Moist color is 10YR 3/3, 2/1 or 3/2 in the upper part and 3/4 in the lower part. The Bt horizon is very gravelly clay loam, very gravelly loam or very gravelly sandy clay loam. The Bt horizon is slightly acid to slightly alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Blint (T), Copperfield, Dillcourt (T), Hyrum, Jadpor (T), Kettenbach (T), Lainand (T), McDaniel, Norod (T), Pait (T) and Ricketts (T) series. The Copperfield, Dillcourt, Hyrum, McDaniel, Pait and Ricketts soils have mean annual soil temperatures less than 52 degrees F. The Blint, Kettenbach, and Norod soils are 20 to 40 inches deep over a lithic contact. Lainand soils have combined A and Bt thickness of 40 to 60 inches.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Carrcreek soils are on stream terraces and alluvial fans. Elevation is 2,200 to 3,500 feet. Slopes are 0 to 5 percent. These soils formed in mixed alluvium. The climate is characterized by warm, dry summers and cool, moist winters. Mean annual precipitation is 30 to 40 inches. Snowfall ranges from 6 to 30 inches. Mean January temperature is about 38 degrees F. Mean July temperature is about 72 degrees F. Mean annual temperature is 50 to 57 degrees F. The frost-free period is 9 to 130 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Crefork and Haysum soils. The Crefork soil averages more than 35 percent clay in the particle-size control section and is on hills. The Crefork and the Haysum soils have less than 35 percent rock fragments in the particle-size control section.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow runoff; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: This soil is used for hayland and pasture, and homesite development. Native vegetation consists of perennial grasses and Oregon white oak, with isolated stands of Oregon white oak and ponderosa pine.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: The soils are not extensive. They occur in Hayfork Valley, and other intermountain valleys in the Klamath Mountains in northern California. MLRA is 5.
