TYPE LOCATION: Atlantico SCD, Puerto Rico; approximately 0.6 kilometer on municipal paved road, southeast of Kilometer Marker 87.1 on P.R. Highway 2. Municipality of Hatillo, Arecibo soil survey area.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Thickness of the sand is more than 60 inches. It consists of 95 percent or more quartz in the soil fraction. Reaction ranges from extremely acid to strongly acid throughout.
The A or Ap horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 3 or 4, and chroma of 3 or 4. Texture is sand or fine sand.
The C horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5 to 7, and chroma of 2 to 6. Where chroma is 2, it is from parent material and not an indication of wetness. Texture is sand or fine sand.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no other known series in the same family.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Carrizales soils are on low uplands along the coastal plain. Slopes range from 2 to 12 percent. They formed in sandy sediments high in quartz. The climate is humid tropical. The average annual precipitation ranges from 60 to 70 inches and the average annual temperature ranges from 76 to 80 degrees F.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Algarrobo, Corozo, Guerrero, Jobos, and Rio Lajas series. All of these soils are on similar positions. The well drained Algarrobo and Corozo soils are Spodosols and have clayey argillic horizons below the spodic horizon. Guerrero soils have sandy surface and subsurface layers 20 to 40 inches thick, and have clayey, kaolinitic argillic horizons. The moderately well drained Jobos soils have more clay in the subsoil. The somewhat excessively drained Rio Lajas soils have argillic horizons.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Excessively drained; very rapid permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas of Carrizales soils are used for pasture. The vegetation consists of native and introduced grasses.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northern coastal plains of Puerto Rico. The series is of minor extent with about 2,700 acres.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Raleigh, North Carolina.
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Series established in Atlantico SCD, Puerto Rico.
