CASLO SERIES

The Caslo series consists of very deep, poorly drained soils that formed in alluvium and lacustrine sediments form in mixed rock sources. The Caslo soils are on flood plains of basin floors. Slopes are 0 to 4 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 4 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 62 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, carbonatic, thermic Typic Fluvaquents

TYPICAL PEDON: Caslo silty clay loam, rangeland. The soil surface is partially covered with 10 percent pebbles.

A--0 to 1 inch; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) silty clay loam, light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) moist; moderate fine platy structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine vesicular and interstitial pores; 5 percent pebbles; violently effervescent; very strongly alkaline (pH 9.6); abrupt smooth boundary. (1 to 3 inches thick)

Bw--1 to 4 inches; light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) clay, light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; many fine interstitial pores; few soft medium salt masses and crystals; strongly effervescent; very strongly alkaline (pH 9.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (2 to 6 inches thick)

Bgy--4 to 10 inches; light gray (5Y 7/1) clay, light olive gray (5Y 6/2) moist; with few fine distinct pale brown (10YR 6/3) mottles; moderate coarse prismatic structure; very hard, firm, sticky and plastic; many very fine interstitial pores; common medium gypsum crystals; strongly effervescent; very strongly alkaline (pH 9.6); clear wavy boundary. (3 to 10 inches thick)

Cg--10 to 34 inches; pale olive (5Y 6/3) clay loam, light olive gray (5Y 6/2) moist; with few thin (1/4 to 1/2 inch) strata of very dark gray (10YR 3/1) fine sandy loam; few fine distinct pale brown (10YR 6/3) and many fine distinct brown (10YR 4/3) mottles; massive; hard, friable, sticky and plastic; many fine roots; common fine tubular pores; violently effervescent; very strongly alkaline (pH 9.2); clear smooth boundary. (16 to 30 inches thick)

C1--34 to 45 inches; stratified very pale brown (10YR 7/3) sandy loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist, and white (10YR 8/1) clay, light gray (10YR 7/1) moist; common fine distinct brown (10YR 4/3) mottles; massive; slightly hard, friable, sticky and plastic; violently effervescent; strongly alkaline (pH 8.8); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 12 inches thick)

C2--45 to 60 inches; white (10YR 8/1) clay, light gray (10YR 7/1) moist; few fine prominent pale brown (10YR 6/3) mottles; massive; very hard, firm, sticky and plastic; violently effervescent; strongly alkaline. (pH 8.8)

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series at this time.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Caslo soils are on flood plains along basin floors. These soils formed in alluvium from mixed rock sources, dominantly from limestone. Slopes are 0 to 4 percent. Elevations are 2,000 to 2,300 feet. The climate is cool, arid with hot, dry summers and cool moist winters. The mean annual precipitation is 3 to 5 inches; mean annual temperature is 58 to 63 degrees F., and the frost-free season is 210 to 250 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are Bobnbob and Cobatus. Bobnbob soils are fine-silty and Cobatus soils have mixed mineralogy.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained, slow runoff; slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Rangeland and wildlife habitat. The present vegetation is mainly saltgrass.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southern Nevada. These soils are not extensive. MLRA 30.
