CHESANING SERIES

The Chesaning series consists of very deep, somewhat poorly drained soils that formed in loamy alluvial deposits overlying sandy alluvial deposits on flood plains. Slope ranges from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 762 mm (30 inches), and mean annual temperature is about 8.3 degrees C (47 degrees F).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, semiactive, calcareous, mesic Aeric Fluvaquents

TYPICAL PEDON: Chesaning silt loam, on a 1 percent slope in an uncultivated area. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

A--0 to 15 cm (6 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) silt loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) dry; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; neutral; clear smooth boundary. [10 to 23 cm (4 to 9 inches) thick]

C--15 to 46 cm (6 to 18 inches); brown (10YR 4/3) very fine sandy loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; few medium distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of oxidized iron; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline; gradual wavy boundary.

Cg--46 to 56 cm (18 to 22 inches); dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) sandy loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; few faint very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) organic coatings on ped faces; common medium prominent dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) and prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) masses of oxidized iron; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline; gradual wavy boundary.

C'1--56 to 71 cm (22 to 28 inches); yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) sandy loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; common medium distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) and prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) masses of oxidized iron; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline; gradual wavy boundary.

2C2--71 to 112 cm (28 to 44 inches); yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) loamy sand; weak fine granular structure; very friable; common fine and medium faint strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) masses of oxidized iron; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline; gradual wavy boundary.

2Cg1--112 to 135 cm (44 to 53 inches); pale brown (10YR 6/3) sand; single grain; loose; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline; gradual wavy boundary.

2Cg2--135 to 152 cm (53 to 60 inches); gray (10YR 5/1) sand; single grain; loose; few faint very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) organic stains; few fine prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of oxidized iron; slightly effervescent; slightly alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in the same family.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Chesaning soils are on flood plains. Slope ranges from 0 to 2 percent. The Chesaning soils formed in loamy alluvial deposits overlying sandy alluvial deposits. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 737 to 940 mm (29 to 37 inches). Mean annual temperature ranges from 8.3 to 11.1 degrees C (47 to 52 degrees F).

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the very poorly drained or poorly drained Cohoctah soils and the very poorly drained Roundhead soils. The Cohoctah soils are on slightly lower landscape positions on the flood plains. The Roundhead soils are in shallow depressions on the flood plains.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Somewhat poorly drained. The depth to the top of a seasonal high water table ranges from 30 to 61 cm (1 to 2 feet) between September and May in normal years. The potential for surface runoff is negligible or very low. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is high or very high. Permeability is moderately rapid in the loamy material and rapid in the underlying sandy material. These soils are subject to flooding in late fall to spring where not protected.

USE AND VEGETATION: Only a small part is under cultivation. Most of the cleared areas are used for permanent pasture. A large amount is in woodland consisting of American elm, white ash, and eastern cottonwood.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: MLRA 99 in lower Michigan. This series is of small extent.
