COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series. The closely related Skanee series is coarse-loamy and has greater than 35% base saturation in the glossic, argillic and fragipan horizons.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Chesbrough soils are on ground moraines associated with the Munising moraine. Slope ranges from 0 to 3 percent. Mean annual precipitation ranges from about 28 to 36 inches. Mean annual temperature ranges from 41 to 43 degrees F. Elevation ranges from 800 to 850 feet.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Bodi (proposed), Kalkaska, and Tawas soils. The moderately well drained Bodi soils are on slightly higher landscape positions. The excessively drained Kalkaska soils are on higher landscape positions. The very poorly drained Tawas soils are in depressions.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat poorly drained. Permeability is very slow in the fragipan and moderate in the rest of the soil. This soil has wet soil moisture status that is perched, at a depth of 6 to 12 inches below the surface, during the months of October, November, March, April, and May. Surface runoff is low.
USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are forested. Common trees are red maple, quaking aspen, Eastern hemlock, balsam fir, yellow birch, and sugar maple.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This series is of small extent.
