CINDERHILL SERIES
The Cinderhill series consists of very deep, excessively drained soils that formed in tephra derived from volcanic rock. Cinderhill soils are on cinder cones and lava fields. Slopes range from 4 to 60 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 18 inches (457 millimeters) and the mean annual air temperature is about 44 degrees F. (6.7 degrees Celcius)
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Ashy-skeletal, glassy, nonacid, frigid Vitrandic Ustorthents
TYPICAL PEDON: Cinderhill very gravelly loamy sand - woodland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)
C1--0 to 2 inches (0 to 5 cm); black (10YR 2/1) and brown (7.5YR 4/3) very gravelly loamy sand, dark brown (7.5YR 3/4) and black (10YR 2/1), moist; 6 percent clay; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine roots; common fine irregular pores; 50 percent cinder fragments; noneffervescent; neutral, pH 7.2; abrupt smooth boundary.
C2--2 to 6 inches (5 to 15 cm); brown (7.5YR 4/3) gravelly loamy sand, dark brown (7.5YR 3/4), moist; 7 percent clay; weak fine granular structure; soft, loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine, fine, medium, and coarse roots; common fine irregular pores; 27 percent cinder fragments; noneffervescent; slightly alkaline, pH 7.4; abrupt wavy boundary.
C3--6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm); black (10YR 2/1) and brown (7.5YR 4/3) very gravelly coarse sand, dark brown (7.5YR 3/4) and black (10YR 2/1), moist; 3 percent clay; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine, fine, and medium roots; common fine irregular pores; 46 percent cinder fragments; noneffervescent; neutral, pH 7.2; gradual smooth boundary.
C4--12 to 60 inches (30 to 152 cm); black (10YR 2/1) very gravelly coarse sand, black (10YR 2/1), moist; 2 percent clay; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine, medium, and many fine roots; common fine irregular pores; 38 percent cinder fragments; noneffervescent; slightly alkaline, pH 7.4.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Cinderhill soils are on cinder cones and lava fields at elevations of 6,500 to 7,500 feet (1,981 to 2,286 meters). Slopes range from 2 to 60 percent. These soils formed in tephra derived from volcanic rock. The mean annual precipitation is 18 to 22 inches (457 to 559 millimeters) and occurs as thunderstorms during July to September and as snow December to February. The mean annual air temperature is 42 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit (5.5 to 7.7 degrees Celsius). The frost-free period is 100 to 120 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Blackash (AZ),
Sunsetcrater (AZ), and Kana`a (AZ) soils. Blackash soils have a Ashy particle size and have less than 35 percent rock fragments or cinders in the control section. Kana'a soils have a Cindery particle size and have greater than 60 percent rock fragments or cinders in the control section. Sunsetcrater soils have a diagnostic cambic horizon with 18 to 30 percent clay in the particle size control section.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Excessively drained; low to very low runoff; rapid to very rapid permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Used primarily for wildlife habitat, recreation, and grazable woodland. Ponderosa pine is dominant with sand bluestem, blue grama, and apache plum.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northern Arizona. Cinderhill soils are of small extent. This soil is named after a recreation area near the type location. MLRA 39 Land Resource Unit 39.1 above the Mogollon Rim.
