CINNAMON BAY SERIES

The Cinnamon Bay series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils on alluvial fans and terraces. They formed in alluvium from adjacent volcanic uplands. Near the type location, the mean annual air temperature is about 80 degrees F., and the mean annual precipitation is about 40 inches. Slopes range from 0 to 12 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, active, isohyperthermic Typic Haplustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Cinnamon Bay loam. (Colors for moist conditions)

A1--0 to 3 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) loam; moderate medium granular structure; friable; few fine, medium and coarse roots; common fine and medium interstitial pores; common medium worm casts; about 5 percent, by volume, pebbles; moderately acid; clear smooth boundary. (2 to 10 inches thick)

A2--3 to 11 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) loam; moderate medium granular structure; friable; common fine roots; many very fine and fine interstitial pores; common medium worm casts; about 5 percent, by volume, pebbles; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (2 to 10 inches thick)

Bw--11 to 21 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) clay loam; moderate coarse subangular blocky structure; friable; few very fine, fine and coarse roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; common medium worm casts; few faint dark brown (10YR 4/3) organic stains on faces of peds; about 5 percent, by volume, pebbles; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (4 to 20 inches thick)

C1--21 to 31 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) sandy loam; massive; very friable; few medium roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; common medium worm casts; about 10 percent, by volume, pebbles; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (3 to 20 inches thick)

C2--31 to 47 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) sandy clay loam; massive; friable; many fine and very fine tubular pores; common medium worm casts; about 10 percent, by volume, pebbles; slightly alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (3 to 20 inches thick)

C3--47 to 57 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) sandy clay loam; massive; friable; many very fine and fine tubular pores; common medium worm casts; about 10 percent, by volume, pebbles; slightly alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (3 to 20 inches thick)

C4--57 to 60 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/4) sandy clay loam; massive; friable; many very fine and fine tubular pores; common medium worm casts; about 10 percent, by volume, pebbles; slightly alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: St. John Island, U.S. Virgin Islands. About 80 feet NE of Salt Pond border, about 50 feet down small trail into bottomland dry forest; 0.75 mile west of Minna Hill and 1.0 mile south-southeast of Bordeaux Mountain. West St. John topographic quadrangle; lat 18 degrees 19 minutes 25 seconds N.; long. 64 degrees 43 minutes 26 seconds W.; PRD 1940.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The thickness of the solum ranges from 20 to 60 inches or more. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to slightly alkaline throughout the profile.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 2 or 3, and chroma of 2 or 3. Texture is loam or clay loam in the fine-earth fraction. Content of pebbles and cobbles ranges from 0 to 30 percent by volume.

The Bw horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 3 or 4. Some pedons have few or common redoximorphic features in shades of brown and yellow. Texture is loam or clay loam in the fine-earth fraction. The content of pebbles and cobbles ranges from 0 to 30 percent by volume.

The C horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 3 or 4. Masses of iron accumulations in shades of brown and yellow range from none to common. Texture is sandy loam or sandy clay loam in the fine-earth fraction. Content of pebbles of cobbles ranges from 0 to 30 percent by volume.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Cinnamon Bay soils are on alluvial fans and terraces. They formed in alluvium from adjacent volcanic uplands. Slopes range from 0 to 1[BB[2 percent. The climate is tropical semiarid. The average annual air temperature ranges from 76 to 82 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation is about 40 inches.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series in the same family.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Lameshur, Sandy Point, Sugar Beach, and Solitude soils. Lameshur soils are on similar positions but have loamy-skeletal particle-size control sections. Sandy Point soils and Sugar Beach soils are very poorly drained and are in lower adjacent saline marshes. In addition, Sugar Beach soils are organic. Solitude soils are somewhat poorly drained and are on lower positions.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Many areas are in native grasses and shrubs. Some areas are being converted to residential and commercial development.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: U.S. Virgin Islands. They are not extensive.
