COD SERIES
The Cod series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in alluvium from limestone and granite on fan terraces. Slopes range from 2 to 6 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 10 inches. The mean annual air temperature is about 65 degrees.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, thermic Durinodic Haplocalcids
TYPICAL PEDON: Cod gravelly sandy loam - rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)
A--0 to 2 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) gravelly sandy loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine roots; common very fine and fine irregular pores; 20 percent gravel; strongly effervescent, 6 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (1 to 3 inches thick)
Bw--2 to 14 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) gravelly sandy loam, yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable; nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine and medium roots; common very fine and fine tubular pores; 20 percent gravel; violently effervescent, 9 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear wavy boundary. (8 to 17 inches thick)
Bkq--14 to 20 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) gravelly sandy loam, light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine roots; common very fine tubular pores; 30 percent gravel; violently effervescent, 26 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; 30 percent irregular shaped calcium carbonate and silica cemented durinodes and brittle platelike masses; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4); clear wavy boundary. (6 to 12 inches thick)

COMPETING SERIES: This is the
Kurstan (NV) series. Kurstan soils have a high sodium content.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Cod soils are on fan terraces at elevations of 2,600 to 2,800 feet. Slopes range from 2 to 6 percent. These soils formed in alluvium predominantly from limestone and granite. The mean annual precipitation is 9 to 12 inches and occurs as thunderstorms during July to September and as gentle rains during December to March. The mean annual air temperature is 57 to 70 degrees F. The frost-free period is 200 to 280 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Arizo,
Greyeagle,
Pearce and
Skelon soils. Arizo soils are sandy-skeletal. Greyeagle and Pearce are shallow or very shallow to a hardpan. Skelon soils are moderately deep to a hardpan.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; low runoff; moderately rapid permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Used for recreation, wildlife habitat and livestock grazing. Vegetation includes creosotebush, cholla, Joshua tree, big galleta and Indian ricegrass.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwestern Arizona. Cod soils are of limited extent. MLRA is 30.
