COFFEPOT SERIES


The Coffepot series consists of deep, well drained soils that formed in colluvium and residuum derived from granite. Coffepot soils are on mountains. Slopes are 15 to 50 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 460 mm and the mean annual temperature is 5.6 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive Pachic Haplocryolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Coffepot gravelly sandy loam--rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted)

A1--0 to 18 cm; very dark gray (10YR 3/1) gravelly sandy loam, black (10YR 2/1) moist; weak coarse subangular blocky structure parting to moderate fine granular; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine, and fine common medium roots; many very fine interstitial pores; 20 percent gravel; slightly acid (pH 6.2); clear wavy boundary. (10 to 18 cm thick)

A2--18 to 36 cm; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) gravelly coarse sandy loam, black (10YR 2/1) moist; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and fine and few medium roots; many very fine interstitial pores; 30 percent gravel; slightly acid (pH 6.4); clear wavy boundary. (15 to 25 cm thick)

A3--36 to 114 cm; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) gravelly coarse sandy loam, black (10YR 2/1) moist; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine interstitial pores; 30 percent gravel; neutral (pH 6.6); gradual wavy boundary. (64 to 90 cm thick)

Cr--114 to 140 cm; weathered granite (grus).

TYPE LOCATION: Elko County, Nevada; on the Humboldt National Forest about 2.5 miles north-northeast of Tennessee Mountain; about 2,000 feet west and 2,100 feet north of the southeast corner of section 33, T. 46 N., R 56 E.; USGS Tennessee Mountain 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle; 41 degrees 49 minutes 49 seconds north latitude and 115 degrees 39 minutes 19 seconds west longitude; WGS84 Decimal Degrees 41.8302778 latitude, -115.6552778 longitude.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: Moist in winter and spring, usually dry late July through early October. Moist more than half the time the soil temperature is above 5 degrees C and completely dry about 70 days after June 30; typic xeric soil moisture regime.
Mean annual soil temperature: 6 to 8 degrees C.
Mean summer soil temperature: 13 to 15 degrees C.
Mollic epipedon thickness: 76 to 127 cm.
Depth to bedrock: 100 to 150 cm to a paralithic contact. The paralithic materials below the contact are weathered granitic rock.
Reaction: Slightly acid or neutral.

Particle-size control section - Clay content: 8 to 18 percent.
Sand content: 60 to 75 percent most of which are the coarse and very coarse sand fractions.
Rock fragments: 15 to 35 percent, mainly fine (2 to 5 millimeter diameter) gravel. Lithology of fragments is granite.

A1 horizon
Value: 3 or 4 dry
Chroma: 1 or 2, dry or moist.
Organic matter content: 3 to 5 percent.

A2 and A3 horizons
Value: 3 or 4 dry
Chroma: 1 or 2, dry or moist.
Organic matter content: 2 or 3 percent.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Aycab, Cinderspring, Coutis, Earcree, Foxvire, Gardners Fork, Grayhead, Hailman, Moonlight, Naz, Razorba, Shook, Skyway, Taral, and Tosp series.

Aycab and Shook soils are moderately deep to paralithic contacts. Cinderspring, Coutis, Earcree, Foxvire, Gardners Fork, Moonlight, Razorba, Naz, and Taral soils are very deep. Grayhead soils have an ustic moisture regime. Hailman soils are dominated by cobbles in the particle-size control section. Skyway soils are moderately deep to lithic contacts. Tosp soils are very deep and deep to lithic contacts and average 5 to 15 percent rock fragments in the particle-size control section.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Coffepot soils are on mountains. They typically occur on backslope positions. These soils formed in colluvium and residuum derived from granite. Slopes are 15 to 50 percent. Elevations range from 1,980to 2,590feet. The climate is semiarid with cold, moist winters and cool, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 400 to 500 mm, mean annual temperature is 6 to 8 degrees C, and the frost-free period is 50 to 70 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: This is the Xica soil. Xica soils are loamy, shallow to paralithic contacts, have mollic epipedons and argillic horizons, and have a frigid temperature regime.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained; medium surface runoff; moderately rapid permeability; high saturated hydraulic conductivity.

USE AND VEGETATION: Coffepot soils are used for rangeland and wildlife habitat. The present vegetation is mainly snowberry, Douglas rabbitbrush, basin wildrye, Columbia needlegrass, arrowleaf balsamroot, and Idaho fescue. Many areas of these soils have been burned in recent years.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northeastern Nevada. These soils are not extensive. MLRA 25.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Elko County (Humboldt National Forest), Nevada, 2017. The name is coined from a nearby spring.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Mollic epipedon - The zone from the soil surface to 114 cm (A1, A2, and A3 horizons).
Paralithic contact - The boundary at 114 cm to underlying soft weathered bedrock (Cr layer).
Particle-size control section - The zone from 25 to 100 cm (parts of the A2 and A3 horizons).
