Longitude-- -66.2385055
Datum--WGS84
Coordinate source--Manually entered from GPS

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Depth to bedrock--Greater than 200 centimeters
Depth of organic material--From 40 to 130 centimeters (16 to 51 inches)
Reaction throughout-Slightly to moderately alkaline (pH 7.4 to 8.4)
Oxidized reaction--Moderately alkaline (pH 7.9 to 8.4)
Electrical conductivity- (1:5 soil-water)--4.0 to 10.0 dS/m throughout

Oase horizons:
Hue--10YR or 5Y
Value--2 to 3
Chroma--1 to 2
Texture--muck or shelly muck
Von Post--H7 to H9

Cseg horizons:
Hue--5Y, 2.5Y, or 10Y,
Value--3 to 5
Chroma--1 to 2

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other known series in the same family.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Parent Material--Sapric organic materials over loamy estuarine deposits
Landscape--Coastal lagoons in Semiarid coastal plain, Puerto Rico
Landform--Mainland coves
Mean Annual Air Temperature--22 to 31 degrees C (71 to 88 degrees F)
Mean Annual Precipitation--508 to 1,145 millimeters (20 to 45 inches)
Mean Annual Water Temperature--26 to 32 degrees C (79 to 90 degrees F)
Water salinity range--28 to 42 parts per thousand

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS:
These are the Majaguas, Ostiones, and Placeres soils:
Majaguas soils--can occur in similar landscape positions (mainland coves) but typically occur further from the mangrove margin on the lagoon bottom. Some Colchones taxadjuncts may classify similar to Majaguas due to not having a thick organic material surface.
Ostiones soils--do not have organic horizons and occur on submerged mainland beach landforms adjacent to mainland coves.
Placeres soils--have a skeletal control section and lack diagnostic organic horizons. Placeres occur in distinctly different estuarine tidal stream landforms and closer to the mangrove margins.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY:
Drainage class--Subaqueous (permanently submerged)
Saturated hydraulic conductivity--Moderately low to high
Soil moisture regime--Peraquic
Soil is continuously inundated by saline and brackish water

USE AND VEGETATION:
Major Uses-- Used for wildlife habitat, recreational boating, fishing, swimming, marinas, mooring fields, and commercial shellfish habitat. These soils provide improved water quality and flood / storm surge water storage. Dominant Vegetation--subaquatic vegetation is dominated by blue-green algae.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT:
General area--Coastal lagoons of Southern coastal plains of Puerto Rico
Land Resource Region--Z - Caribbean Region
MLRA--273 - Semiarid Coastal Plains
Extent--Small

SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (SSRO) RESPONSIBLE: SPECIAL PROJECTS OFFICE

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Humacao Area, Puerto Rico Eastern Part (PR689); Salinas Municipality, Puerto Rico; 2025. The name is from Punta Colchones in Mar Negro area Estuary east of Las Mareas community, where it was originally recognized.

REMARKS: This subaqueous series is mapped in areas previously published as water in Puerto Rico Soil Survey publications.

Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon--
Sapric soil materials--the zone 0 to 59 centimeters (0 to 23 inches).
Hyposulfidic soil materials--0 to 220 centimeters (0 to 87 inches)
Peraquic soil moisture regime--Positive soil water potential (permanently submerged) at the soil surface. (under 0 to 2 meters of salt water)
Oxidized pH values--the shell fragments and Halimeda materials that occur throughout this soil buffer the oxidized pH even as sulfidic materials are likely present.
High n-value--slightly to very fluid throughout the mineral portion of soil series.
