(combined thickness ranges from 30 to 60 inches thick; 76 to 152 centimeters thick)

COMPETING SERIES: This is the Paluxy series. The Paluxy series has a higher mean annual air temperature.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Parent material: sandy alluvium
Landform: high floodplain
Slopes: 0 to 2 percent
Elevation: 1200 to 1550 feet (366 to 472 meters)
Mean annual temperature: 59 to 61 degrees F (15 to 16 degrees C)
Mean annual precipitation: 28 to 31 inches (71 to 79 centimeters)
Wettest months: Dec. - Jun.
Driest months: Jul. - Nov.
Frost-free period: 190 to 230 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include the Gerlane, Lovedale, Grant, Gaddy, Nashville, Waldeck, Yahola, and Zenda soils. The less sandy Grant, Lovedale, and Nashville soils are on the nearby upland. The Gaddy and Yahola soils contain free carbonates and are on lower lying areas. The Gerlane, Waldeck and Zenda soils are in a lower position on the flood plain.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Runoff is negligible on 0 to 1 percent slopes and very low on 1 to 2 percent slopes. Permeability is moderately rapid. These soils rarely flood and have a high seasonal water table at 3.5 to 6.0 feet (1 to 1.8 meters) from Mar. - Jul.

USE AND VEGETATION: Wheat, sorghum, and alfalfa are the major crops. Native vegetation was tall prairie grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central Rolling Red Prairies (MLRA 80A) of south central Kansas and north central Oklahoma. The series is not extensive.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Temple, Texas

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Harper County, Kansas, 1970.

REMARKS:
Classification change: Change from Mollisol to Inceptisol is based on lab sample data and transect data which does not support mollic epipedon criteria in Kansas and Oklahoma.
Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Particle-size control section: The zone from 10 to 40 inches (25 to 100 centimeters). (Ap2, Bw1, Bw2, C1, C2 horizons)
Ochric epipedon: The zone from 0 to 12 inches (0 to 30 centimeters). (Ap1, Ap2 horizons)
Cambic horizon: The zone from 12 to 24 inches (30 to 62 centimeters). (Bw1, Bw2 horizons)
