LOCATION DAVIES MIEstablished Series
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Sandy-skeletal, mixed, frigid Typic Endoaquepts
TYPICAL PEDON: Davies very cobbly muck, on a one percent slope, in a forested area. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)
Oa--0 to 10 centimeters; black (N 2.5/0) very cobbly muck; weak fine subangular blocky structure; very friable; many very fine to medium roots; about 25 percent cobbles and 15 percent gravel; strongly acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (5 to 20 centimeters thick)
Bg--10 to 28 centimeters; grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) very cobbly sandy loam, light gray (2.5Y 7/1) dry; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; common fine prominent brown (7.5YR 5/2) concentrations; few very fine and fine roots; about 25 percent cobbles and 15 percent gravel; moderately acid; gradual wavy boundary. (5 to 23 centimeters thick)
C1--28 to 43 centimeters; olive gray (5Y 4/2) very cobbly sand; single grain; loose; about 25 percent cobbles and 30 percent gravel; moderately acid; gradual wavy boundary. (10 to 20 centimeters thick)
C2--43 to 203 centimeters; dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) very cobbly sand; single grain; loose; about 25 percent cobbles and 30 percent gravel; moderately acid.
TYPE LOCATION: Alger County, Michigan; about 800 feet west and 300 feet south of the northwest corner sec. 29, T. 44 N., R. 20 W.; USGS Lake Stella topographic quadrangle; lat. 46 degrees 11 minutes 12 seconds N. and long. 86 degrees 50 minutes 32 seconds W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The loamy mantle ranges from 13 to 25 centimeters thick. Total volume of rock fragments averages more than 35 percent in the particle size control section. Gravel content ranges from 15 to 40 percent, cobbles range from 10 to 30 percent and stones range from 0 to 5 percent throughout the pedon.
The Oa horizon is muck or very cobbly muck.
Some pedons have an A horizon, with hue of 2.5Y, value of 2 and chroma of 1. Textures are similar to Bg horizon.
The Bg horizon has hue of 2.5Y, value of 5, and chroma of 2. It is very cobbly sandy loam or very gravelly sandy loam. Reaction is moderately acid to slightly acid.
The C horizons have hue of 2.5Y or 5Y, value of 4 and chroma of 2. It is very cobbly or very gravelly sand. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to neutral.
COMPETING SERIES: This is the Poverty series. Poverty soils have more than 27 percent clay in the A and Bg horizons.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Davies soils are on nearly level areas on glacial drainage channels. Slope ranges from 0 to 2 percent. They formed in a loamy mantle overlying sandy and gravelly outwash. Elevation ranges from 187 meters to 236 meters. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 760 to 860 millimeters and mean annual air temperature ranges from 4 to 6 degrees C. The frost-free period is about 90 to 155 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the McMaster, Traunik, Chippeny, Nahma, Ruse, and Namur soils. The moderately well drained McMaster and the well drained Traunik soils are on adjacent upland areas. The very poorly drained Chippeny and Nahma and poorly drained Ruse, and the excessively drained Namur soils are on adjacent bedrock benches.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Poorly drained. The depth to the wet soil moisture status ranges from the surface to 15 centimeters below the surface during the period from October to June. The depth of ponding is 15 centimeters during the months of March, April, May, October, and November. Surface runoff is negligible. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is high over very high.
USE AND VEGETATION: Nearly all is in woodland. Common trees are red maple, black ash, balsam fir, black spruce, yellow birch, and northern white cedar.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: North Central part of Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Major Land Resource Areas 93B and 94B. The series is of small extent.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: St. Paul, Minnesota; MLRA SSO 10-8 (Marquette, Michigan).
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Alger County Michigan, 2007. Source of name is a lake in southern Alger County.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are: cambic horizon - 10 to 28 centimeters (Bg horizon); aquic soil moisture regime - the zone from 10 to 28 centimeters (Bg horizon).
